I need you to remember this:

You will not the able to outwork too many calories if your goal is less body fat and a more toned body composition.

I don't know how this started but really hate that it's still promoted and talked about throughout social circles.

Not only that, when you combine high-intensity cardio-based workouts with a low-carb diet - you are asking for a really s**tty time.

Like no energy, lethargic, mess with your hormones, no muscle or strength type of s**t time.

Don't get me wrong, HIIT can definitely have its place in a training program but it should not be the foundation of a program if your goal is long-term fat loss and muscle tone on your body.

Instead, get familiar with your calorie intake and be sure to eat carbohydrates. You need to fuel that muscle-building process with carbs AND protein.

When you can do that while focusing on the basics of strength training, not only will your results be more in tune with what you want - but you won't hate what you're doing throughout the process

Imagine losing fat, building muscle while enjoying the journey.

Meal planning can be challenging enough.

But with little ones who are picky eaters, it can make it feel like you’re a chef for a boutique restaurant.

I get it.

Your older one didn’t like it when you tossed seasonings in the mix last week.

But your younger one didn’t like what you tried with your simple recipe last week either.

It’s likely you’ve been stuck making different dinners for each person (partner included) which means you can’t be bothered to follow through on yours and you’ll just eat leftovers of what everyone else is having.

Sound familiar? 🤔

There’s a better way!!

You don’t need to cook 4 different meals 🤯every night to ensure you stay on track AND keep your kids fed.

First, take a breath. Some of these changes will be difficult to implement at first and you need to give yourself some grace.

Second, remember that this is a process and it will take time to develop the routine that works for your family.

1. Sugar is not inherently fattening nor will it prevent fat loss (unless it takes you out of a deficit)⁣⁣

2. You don’t need to cut out specific foods or food groups to lose fat and maintain your physique.⁣⁣

3. You don’t have to find “healthy” alternatives to your favourite foods or constantly try to kill your cravings.⁣⁣

I've had quite a few calls and conversations with people over the last week or so.⁠

There was a common theme that honestly really bugged me, and it's not their fault.⁠

I feel like many people are scared to talk about their appearance and to actually have a goal that focuses on their body composition.⁠

It's almost like they feel ashamed to have a physique goal, like they should feel bad for wanting to change the way they look?⁠

I don't understand why this has become a common occurrence, but as a coach it's frustrating.⁠

Your goals are your goals.⁠

They are valid no matter what.⁠

Nobody can tell you that your goal doesn't matter based on how it makes them feel. It's not for them. It's for you.⁠

Whether it's a body acceptance movement or the anti-diet culture that has been rising of late, people seem torn and influenced by others on how they should feel about themselves.⁠

My response: what does your gut tell you?⁠

Answer the question without overthinking it: what is it that you want deep down more than anything else?⁠

If you tell me to lose weight to look and feel better in your clothes, I am not going to tell you otherwise. I know that there's a deeper meaning behind the goal and it's important to understand that.⁠

If you want to lose weight to fit in your summer clothes, that's great. But you should also dig into why you want to fit into your summer clothes.⁠

Do you lack confidence?⁠
Have you lost the spark with your partner/spouse?⁠
Do you want to just feel healthier?⁠
Are you single and are pursuing a relationship?⁠
Is it actually for your future health and so your kids can see you as a role model?⁠

All I'm saying is: do what makes you happy. You should not feel ashamed for wanting to lose fat so you can strut the beach or build muscle so your arms fill out your shirts.⁠

Your goal is yours, own it and get after it no matter what others may think.

When I read this quote, my immediate gut reaction was "Wow...but you have a point"

We could go down quite a few rabbit holes here but since this is Instagram, let's keep it short and succinct shall we?

First, if you are like the average North American, you are likely tapped into the news (whether it be Twitter, cable, or what your friends are sharing on their Facebook feeds). Most of that news is negative which keeps your attention to situations and events that are mostly outside of your control.

Second, internal change is hard. There's no doubt about that. If you pair attention focused on the external with how easy it is to overconsume and convenience of not moving much with work - you can see how hard it is to make changes to our day to day behaviour.

If you add in the constant distraction of TV, movies, music, celebrity, TikTok trends, and how easy it is to get sucked into a social media consumption frenzy - where would you find the time or energy to eat healthier and exercise regularly.

There is so much that takes us away from the most important thing in this world: your health.

Without it, are you really living a life of fulfillment or are you just a passenger along for the ride and cheering everyone else around you on?

This is a little harsh, but it doesn't mean there's no truth to it.

One of my favourite analogies I've heard goes like this:

"𝘚𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘶𝘱 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘢𝘮𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘺 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘧𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵, 𝘢𝘳𝘨𝘶𝘦, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘦𝘳 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘰 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘫𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘦𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘧𝘢𝘷𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘮"

Sorry Leafs fans, I know this one stings extra hard - but when's the last time you fought for your health and fitness at the same level as you arguing and yelling about the disallowed goal last Friday night?

Point is, you have so much more control than it may seem. And it's not all your fault if you don't feel that way.

If you haven't done one before, try a time audit. Take account of where all your mental time is spent, not just physical. Where is your brain focused (or unfocused) for the majority of the day.

Take that data and start to make the changes you need to transform your life.

Stop listening to your friends advice on how much you should be eating or what foods you need to have (or not have) to lose weight.⁣

Unless they are fitness professionals and know your dieting and training history, they are doing more harm than good.⁣

Take this example from my client. At her bodyweight and because she hasn’t had a consistent training program like this before, there’s no way I would recommend 1200 calories for her.⁣

I want my clients to be able to lose fat while eating as much as they can.⁣

Why?⁣

A) So they can enjoy the process⁣
B) So we actually have calories to reduce when the time comes⁣
C) Starving yourself doesn’t work for long term results⁣

If you enjoy the process, you’re going to stick to the process. That will yield more long lasting results than jumping onto another starvation diet.⁣

So yea, stop taking your friends advice to do what they did or what their family/friend is doing to lose weight. It doesn’t apply to you.⁣

Focus on the basics, know your numbers and be consistent as hell.

Whether you are celebrating Easter or not, and want to spend time with others or not, try and make the best of every situation.⁠⁠

It’s not the usual way we do things or even ideal, but we work with what we’ve got.⁠⁠
⁠⁠
One thing I need to stress:⁠⁠

There is no right and wrong here.⁠⁠

The only wrong I can think of is guilting yourself into hours of cardio this week and starving yourself because you ate a lot at Easter.⁠⁠

I wouldn’t be the man I am today without this beautiful woman.

She is my rock, my best friend, my support system and the incredible mother to my 2 boys.

I am grateful to be in the position I am today.

The majority of my clients are women (mostly moms) and I understand that I will never walk a day in their shoes or experience everything that women go through that men don’t (because there is a s**t ton).

I will always do my best to be empathetic and ensure they feel safe working with me and know that I will always do things in their best interest at heart.

Picture yourself hitting the gym 6 days a week for 2 hours at a time.⁠

Then throw in your parental responsibilities, job, and everything else you need to do on a daily basis.⁠

Sounds nuts right?⁠

What I just described to you was my routine 10 years ago. No kids, not many responsibilities - it was easy.⁠

Now take a look where you're at and be honest with what you can 𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 do.⁠

Some enjoy cardio. Some will cut carbs. Some will try fasting methods. All of these will work if you are in a deficit.⁠

The problem lies in adherence and sustainability long term.⁠

Anyone can lose 10lbs in a short period of time, but most are struggling to lose fat and keep it off.⁠

If you tried something in the past and saw some progress but couldn’t keep it going, don’t go back to it. It’s not for you. You clearly couldn’t adhere to it for the long term and it sets you up for failure every time.⁠

If you are finally ready to take action and lose that last 10lbs for good, ask yourself these questions first:⁠

Will I be able to keep this up for more than 6 months?⁠

Have I allotted time in my schedule to work out?⁠

What is my main reason for wanting to lose this weight?⁠

Can I do this alone or do I need help?⁠

These questions will set your mind right and eliminate any short-term fad options that have failed you in the past.⁠

You have to be honest with yourself with your answers if you truly want to lose the weight and keep it off for good.⁠
