💧“A Safer, More Comfortable Home in Barrie”

Walk-in bathtubs and showers improve bathroom safety for seniors by reducing the risk of falls with features like low-step entry, secure grab bars, and slip-resistant flooring.
Walk-in tubs also provide soothing hydrotherapy for comfortable seated bathing, while curbless showers offer easy wheelchair access and a sleek, modern look. 💦🙂...Suzi J

3 SIGNS YOUR AGING PARENT MAY NOT FEEL SAFE AT HOME

❤️ Your Gut Feeling
If something feels “off,” trust that instinct. Family members often notice changes before they become obvious problems. 🙂...Suzi J

3 SIGNS YOUR AGING PARENT MAY NOT FEEL SAFE AT HOME

😕1. They've stopped using the upstairs
They say it's "easier" to sleep downstairs—but really, the stairs have become too risky.

😕2. They're staying home more than usual
What used to be daily walks or errands have quietly stopped. It's not always about motivation—sometimes it's about fear of falling.

😕3. They're showering less often
If your parent used to shower daily but now it's "every few days," the bathroom may have become an obstacle course.

These aren't signs of giving up. They're signals that the home needs to work better for them.

SMALL CHANGES IN BEHAVIOR OFTEN POINT TO BIG SAFETY CONCERNS.

If you're noticing these patterns, you're not imagining it. And there are solutions that don't involve moving.

What other subtle signs have you noticed when aging parents start struggling at home?

Early indicators of dementia: Five behavioural changes to look for after 50
Behaviour changes like apathy, lack of impulse control or socially inappropriate behaviour may indicate a risk of dementia in people over age 50

Dementia is often thought of as a memory problem, like when an elderly person asks the same questions or misplaces things. In reality, individuals with dementia will not only experience issues in other areas of cognition like learning, thinking, comprehension and judgment, but they may also experience changes in behaviour.
It’s important to understand what dementia is and how it manifests.

I didn’t imagine my grandmother’s strange behaviours were an early warning sign of a far more serious condition.
She would become easily agitated if she wasn’t successful at completing tasks such as cooking or baking. She would claim to see a woman around the house even though no woman was really there. She also became distrustful of others and hid things in odd places.

These behaviours persisted for some time before she eventually received a dementia diagnosis.

COGNITIVE AND BEHAVIOURAL IMPAREMENT

When cognitive and behavioural changes interfere with an individual’s functional independence, that person is considered to have dementia.
However, when cognitive and behavioural changes don’t interfere with an individual’s independence, yet still negatively affect relationships and workplace performance, they are referred to as mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and mild behavioural impairment (MBI), respectively.
MCI and MBI can occur together, but in one-third of people who develop Alzheimer’s dementia, the behavioural symptoms come before cognitive decline.

Spotting these behavioural changes, which emerge in later life (ages 50 and over) and represent a persistent change from longstanding patterns, can be helpful for implementing preventive treatments before more severe symptoms arise.
As a medical science PhD candidate, my research focuses on problem behaviours that arise later in life and indicate increased risk for dementia.

💥What does being nominated for the Healthcare Hero Award mean to you?

⭐️I am truly honored to be nominated for the Healthcare Hero Award.
I began my career here 22 years ago, and I’ve never looked back. Every day I’m surrounded by real heroes, and together we have the privilege of making a difference in the lives of our residents. When you come to work and see the impact you make—the smiles, the connections, the moments of joy—it hardly feels like a job at all. I’m grateful for everything our residents and their families have taught me, and I continue everyday to strive to give them the very best experience at VVM.

⭐️What does being nominated for the Healthcare Hero Award mean to you?
Being nominated for the Healthcare Hero Award is incredibly humbling. To me, it represents more than recognition, it represents resilience. I built this practice from a place of lived experience, resilience, and a genuine desire to serve others. Being recognized for my work affirms that holding space for pain, growth, and healing, truly matters in our community.

It is an honour not just for me, but for every client who has trusted me with their story.

This nomination affirms that when we turn our pain into purpose, it creates ripples. It reminds me that resilience is not just something we survive, it’s something we share.

⭐️ What do you hope to continue achieving in your work or business?
I hope to continue expanding Evolution Counselling into a holistic wellness space that integrates mental health, mindfulness, relational healing, and community connections.

My vision is to grow a team of compassionate therapists who share the same commitment to ethical, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive care. I also hope to continue offering workshops, educational resources, and community outreach initiatives to reduce stigma around mental health.

Healing should be accessible, collaborative, and empowering, and I want to keep building that in Barrie.

⭐️How does your work make a difference in the Barrie community?
My work makes a difference at both the micro and macro levels.

At the individual level, I help people process trauma, grief, anxiety, addiction, and relational challenges. When someone begins to heal, they show up differently, in their homes, workplaces, and relationships. Strong families and thriving workplaces are built on emotionally healthy individuals.

But the impact doesn’t stop there.

A core part of my work is normalizing mental health. Through therapy, education, and community engagement, I actively work to reduce stigma and remove barriers that prevent people from seeking support. By appropriately sharing elements of my lived experience, while always maintaining ethical boundaries, I help clients feel less alone and more willing to speak openly about their struggles. That safety creates connection, and connection builds resilience.

At a broader level, I collaborate with community partners, refer to organizations like CMHA, and encourage clients to access additional supports. I advocate for mental health in conversations, events, and partnerships throughout Barrie.

When one person feels safe enough to seek help, they often encourage someone else to do the same. That ripple effect expands beyond the therapy room.

Community resilience begins with individual healing, and one conversation at a time, that healing grows into collective change.

SUPERIOR Home Health Care

“We have a great team of mobility and accessibility experts! ...and a wonderful SUPERIOR Home Health Care ambassador dog, Murphy ...he will greet you when you visit!” ...Suzi J

SUPERIOR Home Health Care is proud to be the largest locally-owned independent Home Medical Equipment vendor in Barrie and operated by John Tom. Our company has served Barrie, Simcoe County and Muskoka County since 1992. Originally operating under the banner/name of a National Tier One Franchise Operation for 22 years, we changed our name to SUPERIOR in September 2014 after choosing not to renew our franchise agreement. We believe being an independent Dealer allows us to serve our clients and community even better! Although our name has changed, we are already well-established and known for superior quality home health care equipment and services. We are also part of a large buying group – enabling us to provide affordable prices on Home Medical Equipment. We are proud when our customers tell us our service and efforts are "superior" to our competitors.

Besides ourselves, we have an experienced, caring team of "Experts in Home Medical Equipment!" We are an integral component of our local Health Care System and we strive to make a difference in our clients' lives. Beyond the quality products we provide, delivering education is truly our passion.

Home and Vehicle Modifications are our fastest-growing division. Providing accessibility within your home or in your vehicle allows you to maintain your lifestyle and independence. Recycled Equipment is also high on our list and we now provide Winter Storage for Scooters.
