Today is World Lymphedema Day - every March 6th. Each year, patients suffering from lymphedema (LE)—a chronic swelling of areas of the body that has no cure—mark March 6 as World Lymphedema Day to bring awareness to the disease. Some people are born with lymphedema (primary), while others begin to suffer from it after surgery or traumatic injury (secondary lymphedema). Many end up with secondary lymphedema as a result of cancer treatments, such as surgery or radiation. Lymphedema is the result of damage to the lymphatic system, and that damage causes lymphatic fluid to leak into other tissues of the body. If not treated, this swelling can cause deformities and infections, and it also greatly affects patients' quality of life.
