A little late to massage therapy awareness week but here's a post by the association

Muscle and joint pain, especially persistent pain, is common in seniors. It can be caused by osteoarthritis or other chronic conditions, but also can be caused by injury or overuse, or may have no known cause. If you’re experiencing aches and pains as you age, your RMT can help you find relief and get you back to activities you enjoyed when you were younger.

This week, share how your RMT got you back to the activities you enjoyed when you were younger.

Over the past year we've seen an increase in the volume of mentions in the news about mental health and it's importance in staying at our best.

This is a great article from B.C. that written for RMTs, but it has some wonderful information for patients as well. It's about how to recognize signs of depression so the RMT can confidently say to a patient "I think there's something meaningful here and it's important that you talk to your doctor about this."

Mental health isn't something typically discussed, and how to manage it is definitely something that isn't taught in our education system. It is important for us to learn more so we can be at our best for our family, friends, and co-workers.

Every therapy has limitations, and so there are some situations where Massage Therapy is not able to directly affect the issue.

But if Massage Therapy can help you sleep, then it could be an important part of helping you manage.

A new study reveals how sleep loss changes brain processing to increase pain.

Massage therapy for anxiety is not often discussed because MT is a physical therapy for a physical issue; its inaccurate to say that MT is a treatment for medically significant mental health purposes.

However, it's been documented that many mental health situations such as clinical depression and anxiety, have physical manifestations that can impede the day-to-day management of these conditions, or the overall daily functioning of the individual.

Thankfully, MT is an effective option for managing the physical manifestations of these conditions, which can help the individual manage.

Hello!

The province is going into a lockdown starting Dec 26.

Because massage therapy is a health care profession, I am permitted to stay open for business.

As usual, appointments are booked spaced apart and the same protocols regarding masks and hygiene are in effect.

Remember, stay home, wash your hands, wear a mask, and be vigilant. We'll get through this together.

Post surgical care can have multiple goals to help with recovery:

- the body gets sore with continued bedrest
- massage therapy is helpful when adjusting to moving differently
- any movement aids like crutches and wheel chairs give rise to new pains
- scar therapy

Keep massage therapy in mind if you or a loved one is facing some of these challenges

Since April the biggest two messages have been to stay home and limit all interactions. Once we were able to return to some semblance of normal, our interactions with others have increased. Ordinarily this wouldn't be a problem, but with the 2nd wave being confirmed and cases are still rising, it's obvious that we need to do more than we have been.

Advice like this is just what we need to make adjustments because it give us all a clear idea on how we can do more.

So what how can we remove 25% of our interactions from our day or week? Start with a list of the usual things that you need to do that has interactions with people, such as groceries and going to the pharmacy, and then find a way to do 1 out of every 4 of them in a way that doesn't involve interactions.

For example, instead of going into the grocery store where you're surrounded by people outside of your bubble, try using a method that reduces the time spent there. More and more stores are doing on-line ordering with curb-side pick up. Give Instacart a try, which is a service where you submit a grocery list and someone gathers them, and delivers it to your house.

We're all in this together. Stay safe, stay vigilant; we'll get through this.

Based on the current projections, Canadians need to decrease their current rate of contacts by 25 per cent in order to get the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic under control in this country.

This is a good introductory article into an emerging field of study.

This is not the placebo effect, which is when you believe the intervention is the same. For example, in drug trials they will tell the subject that they are receiving the medication but in fact they are receiving a sugar pill. Amazingly, some patients have symptom improvement even though they didn't receive the medication.

In this case, the intervention is the same but your beliefs regarding the event is different. In a generic sense, understanding how the health care provider's language affects the patient experience can be an important factor in whether the patient has a positive experience or not.

Does your child hate their visits to the pediatrician? Do they psyche themselves into a panic that the shot will hurt? The best strategy to calm an anxious child may be to reframe their expectations.

As some of you know, last week the Ontario Chief Medical Officer announced that all regulated health care professions can now open.

The College of Massage Therapists of Ontario also recently released their final guidelines for how RMTs are to operate their business. These guidelines include multiple screenings, increased cleaning and disinfection, increased charting and documentation, plus changes to the physical space.

The Registered Massage Therapists' Association of Ontario has put together a nice infographic and blog post detailing some of the changes that you can expect to see.

https://www.rmtao.com/blog/what-to-expect-from-your-massage-therapy-appointment-during-the-covid-19-pandemic

If you didn't receive the e-mail blast sent in early April, I've relocated to 287 Tiffin St, Unit 10. This is an exciting time of change and I'm looking forward to seeing everyone again.

A good reminder from the Association

A big Thank You to the RMTAO!

I was not aware they would put me in the spotlight... *blush*

The RMTAO is pleased to announce our February Member Spotlight Dan Carell! Dan Carell has been a dedicated RMTAO member for 9 years, since he became an RMT. He served on the RMTAO Board of Directors from 2013-2019 and was the Chair of the Audit and Finance Committee for three years. He serves on several RMTAO committees including the Publications Review Panel, Research Committee, Educational Advisory Committee and Conference Committee.

Why did you choose to become a Registered Massage Therapist?

Dan: I had a workout partner who was an RMT. He did mostly sports therapy but he was telling me about the athletes he was working with; one in particular was a strongman power lifter. Every spring he would close his Barrie, ON clinic for about a month while he traveled with the strongman through the European competition circuit. Our profession is versatile and transferable to many different countries; meaning that we can create more opportunities for ourselVESs than some other professions.

What do you like best about your job?

Dan: Working for myself and creating my own hours is pretty great. The even better is all the wonderful people from different backgrounds and vocations that I meet and interact with. I think the best part is seeing the positive changes patients receive from their care: when they have a grimace on the first session and a big smile at the end of the treatment plan, that's the best.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Dan: I like cycling, and recently I've been getting into doing some carpentry and woodworking.

What advice would you give new Registered Massage Therapists?

Dan: Make some RMT friends and ask questions. Go to the CBN meetings. Having a strong professional network is an important thing in health care - we can all learn from each other and it helps us be the best version of ourselves while helping others be the best version of themselves.

Why did you choose to join the RMTAO?

Dan: It's the right thing to do. Imagine a world without professional associations; one without the programs that help to make your life a little easier; one without the work they do to make the profession better... You'd be trying to do all that stuff by yourself. Associations are our own little village where we can band together and make positive changes that benefit us and our patients, it's the right thing to do.
