My name is Ashley Nelson, and I am a Naturopathic Doctor [ND]. I grew up in Barrie, Ontario and have returned home to develop a family practice with a focus in mental health and wellness. I completed a Bachelor of Science in Honours Biology at the University of Waterloo before entering the four year intensive Naturopathic Medical Program at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine. Throughout my education and since I have taken many courses and programs to increase my knowledge in integrative psychiatry to better serve my patients, and contribute to the development of this field. I completed my medical intern training at various locations within the GTA including: the Robert Schad Naturopathic Clinic, the Brampton Civic Hospital Naturopathic Teaching Clinic, and the Queen West Community Clinic. I treated patients with all sorts of concerns under the license of a Naturopathic Doctor. Some of these included: digestive concerns, fertility, musculoskeletal/pain management, mental illness, stress and adrenal concerns, thyroid issues,and weight management. I have also completed a psychiatric preceptorship at the Waypoint Centre for Mental Health in Penetanguishine, ON, where I was exposed to a wide range of mild-severe mental health concerns. Beyond my 'resume', I am a down to earth person who believes in balance and moderation. I do try to practice what I preach and live a good lifestyle with a healthy diet, but I am not perfect, nor do I expect that of you. The goal, in my opinion, is to be your best self. That being said, Naturopathic Treatments often require more work on the patients behalf, and may require some big changes. The clinic is very excited to announce Dr. Ashley Nelson ND will be providing naturopathic care to patients while Dr. Ashley Girard ND heads off on maternity leave. Dr. Nelson is available starting immediately on Thursday's from 2 to 5:30 while Dr. Girard winds down her practice early due to medical reasons. Dr. Girard will be returning in April/May to continue providing care at the clinic.

Post partum tool kit! Being a new mom and a naturopath has made me all the more interested in helping other moms!

While the first 6 weeks after baby are what most people think of when it comes to postpartum care, mental and physical recovery can take much longer. For some, depression or anxiety might begin much later. For others, lack of self care can lead to low motivation, poor food choices, and little sleep.
Being a new mom myself, I’ve realized what an important time this is for women and their health. While we want to focus all of our attention on our beautiful new baby, we can’t forget ourselves. You can’t pour from an empty well!
Here are a few things to think about after you’ve had a baby
✨Blood work (particularly thyroid and iron levels!)
✨Nutrition (are you getting enough calories, enough protein?)
✨Movement (walking, yoga, exercise classes, when are you moving, mom sway aside! 😂)

No wonder anxiety and mental health can be tricky to treat - there are SO many factors that can cause and worsen mental health and the health of our brains. Neurotransmitters get the most attention from a conventional and drug treatment perspective but as you can see that leaves a ton of other factors unaddressed. Naturopathic medicine looks at the whole picture - are there foods that are throwing off your blood sugar and driving you into an anxious fight or flight state? Are you chronically inflamed, dealing with “brain on fire”, are you suffering with insomnia which is leaving you exhausted and anxious? Are you low on key nutrients or do you require extra magnesium or b12 to control your anxiety?

Booooring 🤣. Our social distancing measures and protective masks + gloves have saved lives and we can’t undermine their importance. BUT! when it comes to your immune system - sugar, stress, lack of sleep, poor diet all worsen our ability to stay healthy and well. Simple things like going for walks, journalling, fresh fruits and veggies, regular sleep routine, less screen time, supplements like vitamin d, vitamin c and zinc all support the immune system. We need real steps toward change in the world. What’s been going on has been consuming our conversations and minds, rightfully so. It’s important. #blacklivesmatter is important.
This is a scary and dangerous time for a lot of people. The lives of the innocent people being killed or crippled forever by the more horrible of riots are not okay either, and we as a society need and can do better. To have innocent store owners dragged out of their family business, beaten with a ladder, or smashed in the face with a brick is taking away from the point. Destroying cities leaving those without a car trapped without access to stores and groceries within their community, locked in their homes afraid, is not the progression we need. These things are literally happening and it’s taking the focus off of the most important aspect of the conversation that really needs our attention right now - that we cannot allow black people to be so terribly treated, oppressed, or discriminated against any longer or ever again. It’s truly awful and unbelievable that it still happens to the extent that it does.
We have the means, platforms, and facilities to intact real, true change and we should. As a holistic health care provider, my mind is trained to see the interconnectedness of things. We cannot separate the part from the whole. What happens to one of us affects us all. We all need to come together to heal together over divisiveness, discrimination and inequality. I hope this is possible for the world, the one I’m raising my children in 🖤

We cannot ignore all that is happening in the world. While the last several months have created fear, anxiety, anger, uncertainty, distress - it has also created opportunity for change.
Real transformation is not an overnight process. It requires effort, work, pain, strength, perseverance. The pandemic, the riots, the injustice, the lack of control felt by many are affecting us as individuals, our communities, and globally. But this can also be an opportunity. It may very well be the. transformative pain creating real change, leading us as people, united in the world, to a more beautiful place. That’s my hope at least. 🌎💙🦋

I’ve been a little quiet on the instagram scene these last few months, as things have been a bit busy! New baby girl, due Sept 15th!!
I’m lucky enough to say my pregnancy has been smooth sailing, and I’m hoping I can say the same for the next phase, and “4th trimester” soon to come! I’ve loved and learned a lot from this experience so far already and cannot wait for all to come!
For those who see me in clinic, most of you know I’ll have an awesome ND covering my Sports Medicine practice, and several amazing Naturopaths to see at the Rooted Naturopathic Clinic while I’m away.
September 6th will be my last day of clinic, and I’ll be back March 9th (providing all is well!). Thank you to everyone for your support and understanding while I’m away! 💖

Self care summer! 💖✨ Get that “no filter needed” glow by working on the outside and the inside!
