Dr. Ashley Nelson, ND

Natural Medicines for health concerns, with a special focus in mood, mental health, hormones, and skin care. Welcome, and thank you for visiting!

My name is Ashley Nelson, and I am a Naturopathic Doctor [ND]. I grew up in Barrie, Ontario and have returned home to develop a family practice with a focus in mental health and wellness. I completed a Bachelor of Science in Honours Biology at the University of Waterloo before entering the four year intensive Naturopathic Medical Program at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine. Throughout my education and since I have taken many courses and programs to increase my knowledge in integrative psychiatry to better serve my patients, and contribute to the development of this field. I completed my medical intern training at various locations within the GTA including: the Robert Schad Naturopathic Clinic, the Brampton Civic Hospital Naturopathic Teaching Clinic, and the Queen West Community Clinic. I treated patients with all sorts of concerns under the license of a Naturopathic Doctor. Some of these included: digestive concerns, fertility, musculoskeletal/pain management, mental illness, stress and adrenal concerns, thyroid issues, and weight management. I have also completed a psychiatric preceptorship at the Waypoint Centre for Mental Health in Penetanguishine, ON, where I was exposed to a wide range of mild-severe mental health concerns. Beyond my 'resume', I am a down to earth person who believes in balance and moderation. I do try to practice what I preach and live a good lifestyle with a healthy diet, but I am not perfect, nor do I expect that of you. The goal, in my opinion, is to be your best self. That being said, Naturopathic Treatments often require more work on the patients behalf, and may require some big changes. I will work with you to help you achieve these changes in a step wise manner, reach your health goals, and achieve balance in your life. All the best, in health and happiness! Sincerely, Dr. Ashley Nelson

Woot woot! Final 3 for Barrie’s Best Naturopath! Voting is open until Sept 27th 🤗 https://www.simcoe.com/readerschoice-barrie/categories/people-professionals/subcategories/naturopath
Thank you for your support! 💕👏

Post partum tool kit! Being a new mom and a naturopath has made me all the more interested in helping other moms!

While the first 6 weeks after baby are what most people think of when it comes to postpartum care, mental and physical recovery can take much longer. For some, depression or anxiety might begin much later. For others, lack of self care can lead to low motivation, poor food choices, and little sleep.
Being a new mom myself, I’ve realized what an important time this is for women and their health. While we want to focus all of our attention on our beautiful new baby, we can’t forget ourselves. You can’t pour from an empty well!
Here are a few things to think about after you’ve had a baby
✨Blood work (particularly thyroid and iron levels!)
✨Nutrition (are you getting enough calories, enough protein?)
✨Movement (walking, yoga, exercise classes, when are you moving, mom sway aside! 😂)
✨Supplements (what should you be taking to support your body’s recovery; what’s safe for breast feeding)
✨Rest and Support (is your day structured to allow for a break, are you sleeping or able to rest, is anxiety or insomnia making this difficult?)

You’re not alone! Reach out if you need some support to get you back to feeling like the best mommy your little one could ask for! 💞🤱🏻

Honoured to be a readers choice nominee for Barrie’s Best Naturopath! Along with several of my amazing colleagues at Sports Medicine nominated for physiotherapists, chiropractors, massage therapists and more! Vote for your favs!! Deadling is July 26! Thank you! ❤️

N-acetyl cysteine, also known as NAC, could be what you need if you’re suffering from:
•anxiety
•addiction
•depression
•ocd
•panic attacks
•period pain
•pms
•pcos
•lung and respiratory conditions

It acts as a powerful antioxidant and anti inflammatory, it has direct impact on our brain, and it has little to no side effects.

This is why natural medicines can be so valuable. Low risk, high reward, multiple areas of benefit!

Talk to your ND to learn more or book in with me to figure out your customized plan to get your health back on track! 🙌✨

Good image from an anxiety treatment master class! No wonder anxiety and mental health can be tricky to treat - there are SO many factors that can cause and worsen mental health and the health of our brains. Neurotransmitters get the most attention from a conventional and drug treatment perspective but as you can see that leaves a ton of other factors unaddressed. Naturopathic medicine looks at the whole picture - are there foods that are throwing off your blood sugar and driving you into an anxious fight or flight state? Are you chronically inflamed, dealing with “brain on fire”, are you suffering with insomnia which is leaving you exhausted and anxious? Are you low on key nutrients or do you require extra magnesium or b12 to control your anxiety?
These are all good questions that should be looked at when working on improving your anxiety. #thinkbigpicture ! #getanswers

Another day, another mask! We’re fully up and running to help you get your health back on track in clinic, but you can also connect by phone or virtual appointment if you’d rather stay out of the office! Quarantine and COVID has left people out of sorts - off their nutrition/exercise routine, dealing with higher stress, anxiety or depression, getting poor sleep, still suffering with hormone problems, maybe a combination of all of the above! The good news is, one positive change can create benefits in multiple areas of your life, and when one thing starts to improve it can break the vicious cycle that’s taken over your health and wellness! Let me know if I can help! 🙋🏻‍♀️👩🏻‍⚕️

Booooring 🤣. Our social distancing measures and protective masks + gloves have saved lives and we can’t undermine their importance. BUT! when it comes to your immune system - sugar, stress, lack of sleep, poor diet all worsen our ability to stay healthy and well. Simple things like going for walks, journalling, fresh fruits and veggies, regular sleep routine, less screen time, supplements like vitamin d, vitamin c and zinc all support the immune system. A good immune system is important all year round, pandemic or not! Happy Friday!! ☀️ #stayhealthy

Proud of @chrispartridge87 for taking action. It’s not about the money, he’s also signed several petitions and has been emotionally and intellectually invested in this issue. We need real steps toward change in the world. What’s been going on has been consuming our conversations and minds, rightfully so. It’s important. #blacklivesmatter is important.
This is a scary and dangerous time for a lot of people. The lives of the innocent people being killed or crippled forever by the more horrible of riots are not okay either, and we as a society need and can do better. To have innocent store owners dragged out of their family business, beaten with a ladder, or smashed in the face with a brick is taking away from the point. Destroying cities leaving those without a car trapped without access to stores and groceries within their community, locked in their homes afraid, is not the progression we need. These things are literally happening and it’s taking the focus off of the most important aspect of the conversation that really needs our attention right now - that we cannot allow black people to be so terribly treated, oppressed, or discriminated against any longer or ever again. It’s truly awful and unbelievable that it still happens to the extent that it does.
We have the means, platforms, and facilities to intact real, true change and we should. As a holistic health care provider, my mind is trained to see the interconnectedness of things. We cannot separate the part from the whole. What happens to one of us affects us all. We all need to come together to heal together over divisiveness, discrimination and inequality. I hope this is possible for the world, the one I’m raising my children in 🖤

“Just when the caterpillar thought the world was over.. it became a butterfly.”
We cannot ignore all that is happening in the world. While the last several months have created fear, anxiety, anger, uncertainty, distress - it has also created opportunity for change.
Real transformation is not an overnight process. It requires effort, work, pain, strength, perseverance. The pandemic, the riots, the injustice, the lack of control felt by many are affecting us as individuals, our communities, and globally. But this can also be an opportunity. It may very well be the. transformative pain creating real change, leading us as people, united in the world, to a more beautiful place. That’s my hope at least. 🌎💙🦋

Feeling anxious, tense, having trouble falling asleep? This is one of my go to relaxation tools for myself and my patients! This is an easy step by step layout but there are tons of guided versions on YouTube! Give it a try tonight to wind down before bed! 💤 ✨

As the days go on, more and more people are finding themselves struggling with self-isolation and social distancing. Low mood and depression may be setting in, which after a long winter may feel even heavier. Anxiety and worry over the future, finances, family, job and economic security, the health and wellness of our world - just to name a few - are ramping up high in many people.
With hardship comes opportunity. We have the ability to work on our thoughts and attitudes about situations. Here are a few good reframing ideas.
Many health professionals are available by telemedicine, myself included. Please reach out if you’re struggling. We’re in this together 💙

Someone’s having trouble adhering to the no face touching rule! 👶😂
For the rest of us, keep it simple and wash your hands, eat your fruits and veggies, get some sunlight (in non crowded areas) and get some regular physical activity! All great ways to promote health and boost your immunity! 🌱 #stayhealthy #bewell

I’ve been pretty much off Instagram since becoming a Mommy but wanted I wanted to give an update that I’m back in clinic starting March 31st!! Now...Is it too early for bring your daughter to work day...everyday? 😂❤️ #startemyoung #womeninmedicine #babynaturopath

She’s here!!!
And just like that, nothing becomes more important than doing anything I can towards making her the happiest, healthiest, most special little girl in the world, because she’s my world 💞. Baby Mackenzie, born Sept 23, 2019 💝!

Last clinic day before Mat Leave! ✌️🤰🏻👶 woot woot! It’s bitter sweet because I love my patients, my career, my colleagues - I love what I do! So lucky to be able to say that and feel that way on a daily basis. But fortunately, leaving right now just means more love in my life with my mini on the way! 💕 Updates soon! Back in clinic March 2020!👩🏻‍⚕️

Maternity Leave! 💕🤰🏻✨
I’ve been a little quiet on the instagram scene these last few months, as things have been a bit busy! New baby girl, due Sept 15th!!
I’m lucky enough to say my pregnancy has been smooth sailing, and I’m hoping I can say the same for the next phase, and “4th trimester” soon to come! I’ve loved and learned a lot from this experience so far already and cannot wait for all to come!
For those who see me in clinic, most of you know I’ll have an awesome ND covering my Sports Medicine practice, and several amazing Naturopaths to see at the Rooted Naturopathic Clinic while I’m away.
September 6th will be my last day of clinic, and I’ll be back March 9th (providing all is well!). Thank you to everyone for your support and understanding while I’m away! 💖

Self care summer! 💖✨ Get that “no filter needed” glow by working on the outside and the inside! New skin treatments that are great for summer include the enzyme peel (better than chemical during sunshine weather) and the Oxygenation trio which really detoxifies and brightens the skin. These work best when paired with some skin care basics like making sure you’re well hydrated, getting proper sleep (insomnia? Lots of natural options!!) and good circulation through exercise and contrast showers or dry skin brushing for example. Summers also key for protecting ourselves from UV rays - I recommend mineral based sunscreens/lotions (can find tinted versions to avoid the overly white/pasty mineral sunscreen look) and eating foods that protect us against UV rays (think fruits, veggies, and spices like garlic, ginger, and turmeric!). Beauty from the inside out 🙌

New and Improved IV Therapy Menu! We’ve added the Beauty Bag for glowing skin and antioxidant benefits, the Brain Bag for increasing key nutrients for mood, concussions, and focus, the Pregnancy Bag to nourish you and your little, and the Fertility Bag for men & women to optimize their health pre-conception! If you’re interested in learning more, we offer the free IV prep appointment to help you decide if this is the right treatment for you! It’s a quick, comfortable, efficient way to boost your health! 💉🍊 @ Rooted in Health, Barrie Ontario

Running low on energy? B12 shots can help give you that boost you need to get back on track with longer lasting options like good nutrition, proper sleep, good activity levels, stress reduction etc! They can be that missing piece to the puzzle or act as a tool to help give you the energy/motivation to do what you know you should be doing more of anyway! They’re quick and painless and absorb well for faster results! Win win! 💉

Interested in chemical peels? The ingredients can make a big difference! Lactic peels are gentle but effective. They not only exfoliate the skin getting rid of congestion and debris but also hydrate, leaving your skin feeling smooth and fresh. That being said, if you’re looking to get your skin glowing, make sure to work on the inside too! Increase your water intake, eat lots of antioxidants and foods that decrease inflammation like salmon, olive oil, berries, and seeds. Beautify from the inside and the outside! ✨💆🏻‍♀️

Natural facial rejuvenation 🙌 Cosmetic acupuncture is one of my favourite skin care tools because it not only helps promote our natural production of collagen (which starts to drop in our 20’s 😥) but also treats the *whole* body. If you come in for a treatment, yes you’ll have specific acu points for your face, but you’ll also have them in other areas of your body to promote balance overall which truly helps achieve that natural glow ✨

Spring detox anyone? Before starting a new cleanse or detox plan, make sure you’re choosing a safe and sensible plan that makes sense for your health concerns.
Our bodies naturally detox, but a good detox simply supports and encourages this process by removing the “junk”, nourishing your diet, digestion, and liver with the right nutrients, and taking time for self care and de-stressing! Stress puts a huge burden on our ability to detox and reduce inflammation, so don’t forget the mind-body piece when starting a plan.
