Community Week at SFMH – A Great Week to Remember!

This week, St. Francis Memorial Hospital was proud to host medical students from the University of Ottawa for Community Week—and what a fantastic experience it has been.

Throughout the week, students had the opportunity to explore and experience life in the Madawaska Valley while also spending time in both the Emergency Department and clinic settings. From ATVing and boating to a visit to the iconic Wilno Tavern, the week highlighted the unique lifestyle and strong sense of community that define the area.

Thank you to the students for your enthusiasm and for being part of SFMH this week. It was a pleasure having you, and we hope to welcome you back again in the future! 💙

Information Sharing & Skills Day at SFMH!

On May 27, St. Francis Memorial Hospital proudly hosted an Information Sharing & Skills Day—an engaging day of hands-on learning, collaboration, and skill building for staff.

From geriatric care and community resources to critical care skills like ventilator and BiPAP use, chest tube monitoring, trauma response, and mock codes, teams strengthened the knowledge and confidence needed to deliver safe, high-quality care. Sessions also covered key topics including sepsis recognition, cardiac care, medication safety, escalation protocols, and more—supporting continuous learning across all areas of care.

A sincere thank you to our valued partners and presenters whose expertise made the day a success, as well as our incredible SFMH team who led hands-on sessions.

Thank you to everyone who participated and contributed. Together, we continue to build skills, strengthen teamwork, and enhance the care we provide to our patients and community. 💙

St. Francis Memorial Hospital is proud to enhance its Bone Mineral Density (BMD) service with a new state-of-the-art machine — continuing to provide high-quality osteoporosis screening and diagnostic imaging close to home for the community. 💙

This new technology offers faster scan times, improved reporting capabilities, and supports earlier detection and monitoring of osteoporosis and fracture risk — all while maintaining low-dose imaging and a more efficient patient experience.

The new BMD unit also allows for modernized reporting and integration with Epic, the electronic health record system, helping ensure patients can access the same high standard of care available in larger centres without having to travel far from home.

Sincere thanks to the St. Francis Valley Healthcare Foundation for its fundraising efforts and support in helping with the purchase of the new BMD machine for the hospital and community.

If you are over the age of 65 or feel you may benefit from a Bone Mineral Density scan, please speak with your healthcare provider.

The Diagnostic Imaging team is actively working to begin booking appointments and looks forward to serving the community with this enhanced service.
