🌿 You live with pain... but you keep going anyway.
You smile, you move forward, you try your best. But sometimes it's heavy. The pain's there, in the shadows... and nobody really sees it.
🎥 On April 17th at 7pm, Tania and Jolyane will be live in this group!

👉 chronic pain and everything that comes to grumble into our lives - our energy, our relationships, our morale.
If you've ever felt misunderstood in your pain, this LIVE is for you. 💛
No miracle solution. Just a real moment, to understand your pain better.. and begin to see the light a little more often.
👉 Invite a friend who would feel good. ✨

Occupational therapists (OTs) are here to help you live life to the fullest! They focus on enabling participation in occupations—the everyday activities that bring meaning and purpose to your life. These occupations are grouped into three main categories:

✨Self-Care: These are the activities that keep you independent and thriving, such as dressing, grooming, bathing, and meal preparation. If challenges make these tasks difficult, an OT can provide strategies, tools, and techniques to make them easier.

💼 Productivity: Whether it’s work, school, or volunteering, productivity is all about contributing to your community and achieving your goals. OTs can address barriers that may be interfering with achieving your goals.

🎨 Leisure: From hobbies to socializing, leisure is what brings joy and balance to life. OTs can support you in finding unique ways to participate in your leisure activities.

No matter your age, ability, or goals, occupational therapy is about empowering you to participate in the activities that matter most.

Why do occupational therapists often assess what’s known as ‘functional cognition’? Cognition refers to many processes such as attention, memory, problem-solving, our awareness of the world around us, controlling our body movements, etc. Functional cognition refers to how these cognitive skills are used and integrated to accomplish everyday tasks. Since OTs are skilled at evaluating and treating functional impairments, it makes sense that they would be focused on functional cognition and how it affects day-to-day activities!

Check out our segment highlighting some of the occupational therapists (OTs) making a difference across New Brunswick. Keep reading to dive into the diverse world of occupational therapy in this province with our second OT spotlight – Jolyane Aubé!

Name: Jolyane Aubé
Area of practice/region: Private practice in northeastern New Brunswick region.
Population/clientele: Adult population – various clients, mainly mental health and persistent pain.

What motivated you to become an occupational therapist? My older sister who was studying Physiotherapy discovered occupational therapy and called me confirming that she had found my vocation! I was immediately attracted by the human aspect, the creativity, the autonomy and the diversity of the practice. I must still admit that at the start of my practice I was a little “lost” not knowing if I had made the right choice. Over the years, I have gained the confidence, the wisdom that comes with experiences, by continuing my studies on the subjects that fascinate me, by following my heart, I can now say that yes, I am passionate about the practice of occupational therapy even after 22 years of practice.

Tell us about a typical day: Being self-employed, I plan my hours accordingly to my family commitments and my personal needs, so between 3.5 and 4.5 working days per week. I contract my services mainly through a psychotherapy clinic in Bathurst where I have a nice office. I meet my clients either at the clinic, at home or in the community to support them in achieving their functional goals. I collaborate with several organizations, community members, employers and health professionals either for my individual clients or for various projects. I consider myself lucky to be able to integrate my passions including nature, yoga and art on occasion into my interventions.

What do you like most about your role? Flexibility, the rhythm I created for myself, creativity and interpersonal relationships.

What do you wish more people knew about occupational therapy? The diversity of the profession and its humanity.

Did you know that occupational therapists often assist with return-to-work planning following an injury? OTs can assess your level of functionality and any limitations you may experience post-injury. They also collaborate with your employer to develop a customized return-to-work plan that outlines the gradual progression of hours, duties, and responsibilities as you transition back to work. They may recommend modifications or accommodations in the workplace, such as ergonomic adjustments, assistive devices, or various tools to support your successful return. By working closely with you and your support network, occupational therapists consider your goals and overall function to support your successful reintegration into the workforce!

There are so many benefits to having occupational therapy services offered as part of workplace health benefits. Occupational therapists provide preventive, impactful, and low-cost solutions to various mental and physical health-related issues. OT services can also play a role in reducing the costs of injuries, mental health concerns, and workplace illnesses, to name a few. Do you know if OT is covered under your workplace health benefits? Make sure you ask! If OT is not included, reach out to your employer, insurance provider and/or union, and to be included as a flexible health insurance coverage option in your health benefits. We can work together to ensure that OT coverage becomes a standard part of all health benefit plans!
