What Is Muscle Fatigue?

Muscle fatigue happens when a muscle temporarily loses some of its ability to produce force after being used.

When you move, your muscles use energy to contract. As activity continues, those energy stores gradually decrease and metabolic byproducts begin to build up. This can lead to sensations like heaviness, reduced endurance, or temporary weakness in the muscle.

Muscle fatigue is a normal physiological response. It can occur with exercise, repetitive tasks, prolonged posture (such as sitting or standing for long periods), or the physical demands of everyday life.

Your body is always communicating with you. Muscle fatigue is one way it signals the need for rest, recovery, or support.

Massage therapy focuses on the assessment and treatment of soft tissue within its regulated scope of practice in New Brunswick. It may be included as part of a person’s overall care and wellness routine to support muscle relaxation and physical comfort.

🌿🤍 Hands-on care can help the body feel safe enough to relax.

If you are experiencing persistent weakness, injury, or other health concerns, consult your physician.

Understanding Acute vs. Chronic Muscle Tension

Muscle tension can show up in different ways, and one of the simplest ways to understand it is by looking at how long it has been there.

Acute muscle tension
“Acute” means something that comes on suddenly and is usually short-term. This might happen after a new activity, sitting too long in one position, or straining a muscle. It often feels noticeable, specific, and easier to pinpoint.

Chronic muscle tension
“Chronic” refers to tension that stays around for a longer period of time. This can develop from repetitive movements, ongoing postural habits, or muscles remaining slightly contracted day after day. Chronic tension often feels more gradual and sometimes more widespread.

These terms describe patterns of muscle activity — they are not medical diagnoses.

Your body is always communicating with you. Tension is one of the ways it signals that something may need attention, support, or a shift in how it’s being used.

Massage therapy focuses on the assessment and treatment of soft tissue within its regulated scope of practice in New Brunswick. Each treatment plan is guided by individual assessment findings and your personal goals.

✨ Listening to your body is one of the most powerful forms of self-care.

If you are experiencing injury, significant pain, or medical concerns, consult your physician.

What It Means to Be a Member of the College of Massage Therapists of New Brunswick

In New Brunswick, massage therapy is a regulated health profession.

Being a member of the College of Massage Therapists of New Brunswick (CMTNB) means a therapist has met provincial registration requirements and practices under established professional standards.

As a member of the College, a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT):

• Has completed approved education and clinical training
• Has successfully met registration requirements
• Follows a professional Code of Ethics
• Practices within a defined scope of practice
• Maintains ongoing continuing education
• Is accountable to a regulatory body

The role of the College is to protect the public by ensuring that massage therapy services are provided safely, ethically, and competently.

When choosing a massage therapist, you may wish to confirm that they are a current member of the CMTNB.

Massage therapy focuses on the assessment and treatment of soft tissue within its regulated scope of practice and can be an important part of a client’s overall support system, working alongside other healthcare services.

How Circulation Supports Muscle Function

Your muscles rely on healthy blood circulation to function well.

Blood carries oxygen and nutrients to muscle tissue — both of which are essential for normal muscle contraction and overall tissue health. Circulation also helps transport metabolic byproducts away from the tissues as part of the body’s natural processes.

Throughout the day — whether you’re exercising, sitting at a desk, working on your feet, or simply moving through life — your muscles are constantly adapting. Circulation plays an important role in supporting that normal function.

Massage therapy involves hands-on techniques applied to soft tissue. These techniques may help support local circulation within the treated area, as part of the body’s natural physiological response.

Massage therapy does not treat circulatory disorders or replace medical care. If you have concerns related to circulation or vascular health, consult your physician.

What to Expect at Your First Massage Therapy Appointment

If you’ve never seen a Registered Massage Therapist before, here’s what a typical first visit may include:

1. Health History & Intake Form
You will be asked to complete a confidential health history form. This helps your therapist understand relevant medical history, current concerns, and whether massage therapy is appropriate for you.

2. Assessment & Discussion
Your RMT will review your intake form and discuss your goals for treatment. A brief physical assessment may be performed to evaluate posture, range of motion, or areas of muscular tension.

3. Informed Consent
Your therapist will explain the proposed treatment plan and obtain your consent before beginning. You may ask questions at any time.

4. The Treatment
You will be given privacy to undress to your comfort level. Professional draping is always used to ensure privacy and modesty. Only the area being treated will be uncovered.

Pressure and techniques are adjusted based on your comfort and feedback throughout the session.

5. Post-Treatment Information
After your session, your therapist may provide general self-care suggestions or discuss follow-up options based on your treatment goals.

Massage therapy focuses on the assessment and treatment of soft tissue within the regulated scope of practice in New Brunswick.. If you have specific health concerns, I encourage you to consult with your physician.

What Is Soft Tissue?

Soft tissue refers to the tissues in the body that support, connect, or surround structures such as bones and organs. These tissues play a key role in movement, posture, and overall physical function.

In massage therapy, we commonly work with the following soft tissues:

• Muscles
Tissue responsible for movement, posture, and stability. Muscles contract and relax to allow the body to move and adapt to daily activity.

• Fascia
A continuous layer of connective tissue that surrounds and supports muscles, bones, nerves, and organs. Fascia helps provide structure, support, and coordination throughout the body.

• Tendons and Ligaments
Connective tissues that contribute to movement and joint stability. Tendons connect muscle to bone, while ligaments connect bone to bone.

Soft tissues are involved in nearly every movement we make. Factors such as posture, repetitive activity, physical workload, injury history, and daily stress can influence how these tissues feel and function over time.

Massage therapy is a regulated healthcare profession in New Brunswick and focuses on the assessment and treatment of soft tissue within its defined scope of practice.

Why Choosing a Registered Massage Therapist Matters

In New Brunswick, massage therapy is a regulated health profession. Registered Massage Therapists (RMTs) are members of the College of Massage Therapists of New Brunswick (CMTNB) and must meet specific education and practice standards.

Here’s what that means for you:

• Completion of approved education and clinical training
• Successful completion of registration requirements
• Adherence to a professional Code of Ethics
• Accountability to a regulatory body
• Ongoing continuing education requirements

Regulation exists to protect the public. It ensures that registered therapists practice within a defined scope and follow established standards of care.

Many extended health insurance providers require treatment to be performed by an RMT who is a member of the CMTNB in order for reimbursement to be eligible. Clients are encouraged to confirm coverage details directly with their insurance provider.

Choosing a registered therapist ensures you are receiving care from a practitioner who meets provincial regulatory standards.

Restful sleep begins in the body.

When muscles remain tense for long periods, the body can have a harder time fully unwinding at the end of the day. Tight shoulders, a clenched jaw, or a constantly “on” nervous system can all interfere with the body’s ability to settle into rest.

Massage therapy works with the soft tissues of the body to help reduce muscular tension, support healthy circulation, and encourage the nervous system to shift toward a more relaxed state. This physical relaxation can make it easier for the body to transition into sleep and maintain a sense of ease through the night.

Many people choose to include massage therapy as part of their regular healthcare and self-care routine to support relaxation and overall sleep quality.

Not sure which type of massage feels right for you? Let’s gently break down a few of the options I offer so you can choose what best supports your body right now ✨

TMJ-Focused Massage
This treatment focuses on the muscles of the jaw, face, neck, and upper shoulders—areas where many of us unconsciously hold tension from clenching, stress, or daily life. The work is centered around the surrounding soft tissue to help encourage relaxation, ease tension, and support mobility.
(Massage therapy does not diagnose but we can help treat symptoms of TMJ disfunction.)

Prenatal Massage
Created specifically to support the changing body during pregnancy, this style of massage uses thoughtful positioning and pressure modifications to keep both comfort and safety in mind. The focus is on supporting the musculoskeletal changes that occur throughout pregnancy and helping you feel more at ease in your body.
Please consult your healthcare provider before booking during pregnancy.

Energetic Massage
This is a more gentle, calming approach that blends light therapeutic touch with intentional techniques to help the nervous system settle. The focus is on deep relaxation, balance, and allowing the body space to rest and reset. Pressure is typically lighter and guided by your comfort level.

Every body is unique. During your intake, we’ll chat about your health history, comfort level, and what you’re hoping to receive from your session so we can choose the approach that feels most supportive for you.

Massage therapy in New Brunswick is a regulated healthcare profession, and treatments are provided within a professional, clinical scope of practice to support soft tissue health, mobility, and relaxation.

That said, massage therapy is not a replacement for medical diagnosis from your family Dr.. If you are experiencing ongoing, unexplained, or worsening symptoms, I encourage you to consult your family physician or another appropriate regulated healthcare provider to ensure you’re receiving the best care for your needs.

5 Signs Your Body May Be Asking for Muscle Care

Your body is always communicating with you — often through sensation.
While only a qualified health professional like your family Dr. can diagnose medical conditions, these are some common physical signs that your muscles may be asking for help:

1️⃣ Persistent muscle tightness
If areas like your neck, shoulders, jaw, or lower back always feel tense, it may be a sign that those muscles are working overtime — often due to posture, repetitive movements, or daily stress.

2️⃣ Reduced range of motion
If turning your head, reaching overhead, or bending feels more restricted than it used to, tight soft tissue can sometimes play a role.

3️⃣ Postural fatigue
Long hours sitting, standing, or moving through the same patterns can create muscular fatigue. Overworked muscles often feel heavy, stiff, or achy by the end of the day.

4️⃣ Tension-based discomfort
Muscular tension can show up as localized pressure or discomfort. Massage therapy focuses on the soft tissues and may help support muscular relaxation.

5️⃣ Difficulty fully relaxing
When the body stays in a guarded or contracted state, it can be harder for the nervous system to truly settle into rest.

Massage therapy is a regulated healthcare service that works with muscles and connective tissue to help ease tension, support circulation, and assist the body in shifting toward a more relaxed state. Many clients choose to include massage therapy as part of their regular healthcare routine.

If you’re experiencing ongoing pain, injury, or health concerns, always consult with a regulated healthcare professional 💛✨

What actually happens in the body during stress?

When we experience stress, our nervous system shifts into what’s commonly known as the fight or flight response. That response is meant to protect you… but it was never designed to stay on all day.

Over time, muscles can remain slightly contracted — and that tension starts to feel normal… even though it isn’t.

You may notice:
• Tight shoulders or jaw
• Shallow breathing
• Increased heart rate
• Ongoing muscle tension that never fully releases

Massage therapy works directly with the soft tissues of the body. Through intentional, therapeutic touch, we can:

• Help reduce muscular tension
• Encourage healthy circulation to the tissues
• Support your nervous system in shifting toward rest and relaxation

Massage therapy does not treat psychological stress disorders, but many people include it in their wellness routine to support their physical body while navigating daily stress.

Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is allow your body the space to soften.

If you’re ever unsure whether massage therapy is appropriate for you, I always recommend speaking with a regulated health professional.

And if you have questions about how I approach treatments — especially for jaw tension, prenatal care, or chronic muscle tightness — I’m always happy to chat 💛✨
