What a beautiful weekend we had here in Beamsville! ๐ŸŒž๐ŸŒน I know many of us were out in the yard or the garden getting ready for spring planting. After a long winter indoors it can be tough on our bodies if we jump into doing a lot of bending, twisting, lifting, pulling, and pushing too quickly.

If you're feeling aches and pains, come in for an osteopathic assessment and treatment to get yourself back to feeling your best and enjoying the beautiful weather pain free โœจ

The weather forecast is looking (mostly) great for this weekend ๐ŸŒž, so I know a lot of people will be itching to start spring cleaning ๐Ÿงน๐Ÿงฝ. Here are 5 tips to help you avoid injury while you freshen up your home for spring.

๐ŸŒธPlan your work, and work your plan! Ok, so my grade 8 teacher used to say this about writing essays, but what I mean is this โ€“ think about what tasks you want to get done and spread the heaver/harder tasks out with the lighter tasks in between. Donโ€™t try to get everything done on the same day

๐ŸŒนTake frequent breaks. Often our spring cleaning tasks require us to use repetitive movements, such as making a wiping movement over and over with your dominate hand, or lifting several boxes to clean out a storage area. Our bodies might not be used to doing these tasks repeatedly, so itโ€™s important to take breaks to avoid overuse injuries. This goes back to #1 โ€“ plan your cleaning tasks to avoid too much repetition

๐ŸŒป Use proper body mechanics. This one is important. Good form Is as important during our day to day functional movements as it is during a workout. Thereโ€™s too much to cover in detail here, but Iโ€™d be happy to discuss function movement tips during our next appointment. Remember to keep your spine as neutral as you can, but not rigid, hold any weight close to your body, don't over-reach, and avoid unnecessary twisting

๐ŸŒบ Warm up before starting any heavy tasks such as cleaning gutters, mowing or raking the lawn, or anything involving heavy lifting. Even a few minutes of warming up your body, maybe a walk around the block or some fluid stretches, will help prevent injuries

๐ŸŒทDonโ€™t ignore pain! Itโ€™s normal to have some delayed onset muscle soreness after doing work youโ€™re not used to, but anything that feels sharp, pinchy, or doesnโ€™t go away after a few days should be evaluated by a professional.

Remember, youโ€™re more likely to avoid injury if your body is in good alignment before you start. Book an osteo appointment today to help avoid injury or to help with any post cleaning aches or pains. Happy spring! ๐ŸŒฑ

It's true! Osteopathic treatment helps more than just aches and pains. One of the regions of the body that can be helped with treatment is the digestive system. How you ask? ๐Ÿ‘‡ ๐Ÿ‘‡ ๐Ÿ‘‡

๐Ÿ‘‰ We help free up the fascial tissue that surrounds each organ, and connects the organs to the musculoskeletal system. This allows the nerves, lymphatics, and blood vessels to work freely and prevents stagnation

๐Ÿ‘‰ We remove restrictions in the vertebrae, pelvis, ribs and diaphragm which are intimately related to the digestive organs. Because these areas share spinal nerve innervation with the digestive organs, restrictions in the somatic (bones, muscle) areas can reflex to the viscera (organs) and cause digestive issues. The reverse can also occur - visceral issues can cause somatic pain.

๐Ÿ‘‰ We restore balance to the autonomic nervous system, which controls gut motility. These nerves come from many regions of the body, including the brain, thoracic and lumbar spine, and the sacrum. This includes the vagus nerve (CN X), which travels from the brain to the gut and is vital to digestive health (and much more!)

These are just 3 of the ways osteopathic treatment can help the digestive system, not the only ways! Remember that we cannot truly separate the body into different systems. The body is a dynamic unit of function, and if we make change in one area of the body the balance of the entire body will be affected, creating change in other areas too.

Have a great weekend everyone! ๐Ÿ’›

While Osteopathy may seem complicated, the overarching concept is fairly straight forward: It is about aligning your structure so the body can heal itself. The cause of your misalignment isn't always so clear, and OMPs don't merely treat your symptoms. OSTCAN OMPs are trained to get to the root cause of your misalignment by understanding you as a whole, and use this information to apply safe, effective and efficient treatment.

I am so happy and proud to be able to practice osteopathy in two women-owned spaces - and It's inspiring to work surrounded by strong female leaders ๐Ÿ™Œ

The profession of osteopathy itself has a history of breaking down gender roles. The first school of osteopathy was open to both male and female students when it was created in 1892 - in a time when women were generally not encouraged to pursue higher education. 6 of the 21 students in the first class were female ๐Ÿ’ช

All this shovelling got you down? Sore backs, shoulders, arms, and legs can be a problem after spending time shovelling. Sometimes itโ€™s just muscle aches from using muscles that havenโ€™t been used in awhile, but other times we can suffer pulls, strains, or other injuries that may need a helping hand to heal. Come in for an osteopathic assessment and treatment if youโ€™re feeling sore after this winter storm โ„๏ธ ๐ŸŒจ Booking link in bio
