The weather forecast is looking (mostly) great for this weekend ๐, so I know a lot of people will be itching to start spring cleaning ๐งน๐งฝ. Here are 5 tips to help you avoid injury while you freshen up your home for spring.
๐ธPlan your work, and work your plan! Ok, so my grade 8 teacher used to say this about writing essays, but what I mean is this โ think about what tasks you want to get done and spread the heaver/harder tasks out with the lighter tasks in between. Donโt try to get everything done on the same day
๐นTake frequent breaks. Often our spring cleaning tasks require us to use repetitive movements, such as making a wiping movement over and over with your dominate hand, or lifting several boxes to clean out a storage area. Our bodies might not be used to doing these tasks repeatedly, so itโs important to take breaks to avoid overuse injuries. This goes back to #1 โ plan your cleaning tasks to avoid too much repetition
๐ป Use proper body mechanics. This one is important. Good form Is as important during our day to day functional movements as it is during a workout. Thereโs too much to cover in detail here, but Iโd be happy to discuss function movement tips during our next appointment. Remember to keep your spine as neutral as you can, but not rigid, hold any weight close to your body, don't over-reach, and avoid unnecessary twisting
๐บ Warm up before starting any heavy tasks such as cleaning gutters, mowing or raking the lawn, or anything involving heavy lifting. Even a few minutes of warming up your body, maybe a walk around the block or some fluid stretches, will help prevent injuries
๐ทDonโt ignore pain! Itโs normal to have some delayed onset muscle soreness after doing work youโre not used to, but anything that feels sharp, pinchy, or doesnโt go away after a few days should be evaluated by a professional.
Remember, youโre more likely to avoid injury if your body is in good alignment before you start. Book an osteo appointment today to help avoid injury or to help with any post cleaning aches or pains. Happy spring! ๐ฑ
