Let’s talk SADDLE FIT! Yesterday I took Valentine to a jumping show and I was trying out a new saddle. He warmed up strong but he hunched up a few times coming off jumps and crow hopped. First red flag. After I readjusted his saddle and came back into the ring for our first class, he was suddenly lame and very ouchy at a trot. His legs were fine so we thought shoulder. Hauled him home and did a Magna Wave session and adjusted and stretched his shoulder and soft tissue surrounding it. I did not give him any bute so I could assess him better today. After thinking about it, I actually thought it may be saddle fit but I did not see any problems initially and he had jumped fine in warmups with it. This video is right before our first class. The next three videos (posted in the comments section) are right after we did our class and then the other two from this morning. The videos from today you can see he is still a little off on the front left, but his shoulder blade (and the sensitive cartilage at the distal end) was most likely hitting the tree point with every movement, leaving him still sore today. Valentine is a sensitive horse, and thankfully he lets me know when saddles do not fit. I did not understand what he was telling me at first but I am glad it was what I thought. Saddle fitting is SO important and can be one of the leading causes of behavior issues and pain. This was my mistake in not making sure that new saddle fit him in all the proper spots, not just the height over the withers. If you are ever questioning your saddle fit contact a saddle fitter or therapist that is qualified. We should not overlook this for our equine partner’s sake ❤️
