Deep Tissue Lymphatic Acupuncture is different. It’s one patient at a time, one needle at a time, and we take our time.

This Japanese style is very much concerned with two things:
1. Accessory breathing muscles, and
2. The vagus nerve.

By relaxing your accessory breathing muscles, you breathe deeper. By breathing deeper, you stimulate your vagus nerve. By stimulating your vagus nerve, you take yourself out of FIGHT OR FLIGHT and back to r e s t and d i g e s t.

If you suffer from poor sleep — either problems falling asleep, waking up throughout the night, or not feeling rested when waking, try Deep Tissue Lymphatic Acupuncture with !ME!

It’s no secret that while I can help a variety of health concerns, the top reason patients come to see me is pain.

Here are three simple but compounding tips to help you overcome the discomfort you are in (and what I commonly prescribe as homework):

1. Gentle heat is best — A fun East Asian medicine saying is that ice is for preserving dead things. When an ankle is sprained, the body brings heat and swelling to the area. East Asian medicine doesn’t think the body has done anything wrong and supports it by adding gentle heat via a hot water bottle or magic bag. Also, Dr. Mirkin, who came up with the Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation acronym back in the 70’s said he only got one right: compression. His more recent studies show that ice delays healing and kills tissue. East Asian medicine is still waiting for the rest of the world to catch up to what they knew thousands of years ago.

2. A ball and a breath — A squash or lacrosse ball makes a great massage tool and facilitates the ability to focus one’s breath on a point. For stiff muscles that don’t want to release, the pressure from a ball can help patients direct their breath to the area and soften the tightness with every exhale.

3. Stretch — If we were to put one dollar in a bank account today, there won’t be any interest tomorrow. However, if we continue to put one dollar in the bank, in 30 days, we’ll have accrued some interest. Stretching is the exact same; daily stretching adds up. I ask my patients to get on the floor and stretch for 15 minutes before bed. Why before bed? It calms the mind, relaxes the muscles for a better sleep, and it forces patients to remember to stretch — because they’re not allowed to go to sleep unless they’ve stretched!

These three really add up over the course of a couple of weeks. Try some gentle heat, self-massage, and stretching for your aches and pains. You just might adopt this protocol permanently!

When our children were younger, there was a running joke in the house: Dad is the p**p police.

Whenever anyone wasn’t feeling well, my very first question to ask was how their p**p was. The reason for my invasive questioning was because, in the world of traditional East Asian medicine, I can get a lot of information from the frequency and consistency of someone’s stool. While bowel movements are part of a larger picture, I can often tell what kinds of foods someone is eating as well as their mental-emotional wellbeing.

Here are two examples:

1. If your stool is long and skinny like a pencil, there’s a good chance a lot of over-thinking, brooding, and/or rumination is going on. Also, your digestive system may be having a hard time with the foods you are giving it.

Suggestions? Breathe, pray, and meditate. Focus on the single task you are working on in a single moment. Eat clean, but try to stay away from cold (think: smoothies) foods. I once asked a patient to trade their morning smoothie for some homemade oatmeal with cinnamon twice a week. They saw a positive change in their bowels because of the added warmth.

2. If your stool is hard to pass and often comes out like rabbit pellets, there’s a good chance there’s stress and tension. Also, there’s likely not enough roughage (think: dark, leafy greens) and foods that have water (think: apples, watermelon, lettuce).

Suggestions? Breathe and move. Movement is one of the best ways to release tension from the body. Plus, deep breathing and movement moves the structures that digest food and evacuate stool. I once asked a patient, who drank water throughout the day, to start eating foods with water and they had a positive change. We need enough water the “float the boat” and then we need to make some waves!

Regardless of whether your digestion is your main concern or not, a practitioner such as myself often asks for a detailed explanation of your bowel movements to help complete the overall picture of YOUR health.

Hey you wonderful people! My name is Kenton Sefcik and I am a Registered Acupuncturist.

I have been in practice for 17 years. I graduated from the Alberta College of Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine with a Diploma in Acupuncture and a Diploma in TCM.

Did you know that acupuncture isn’t regulated in Nova Scotia? That’s why I wrote board examinations in Alberta and still hold my license there to this day. Over my career, I have taught for two acupuncture schools, was a guest lecturer at Acadia University, and have been a speaker for both Saskatchewan and Nova Scotia Naturopathic conferences.

I practice a unique style of acupuncture. I see one patient at a time, I use one needle at a time, and I take my time.

I am a general practitioner. I am comfortable treating pain, sleep, digestion, mood, and menopausal concerns. I’ve been part of successful fertility treatments, helped induce labour, and increased milk production.

Whether or not you’ve experienced traditional East Asian medicine before, I’d love the opportunity to leave you better than I found you.

Sincerely,
Kenton Sefcik, Dip.Ac, Dip.TCM, R.Ac
