🚗✨ Struggling with bright headlights at night? You’re not alone.

Glare from oncoming headlights can significantly impact your ability to see clearly while driving. At night, our vision is already reduced—contrast, depth perception, and reaction time all decline. Add bright or misaligned headlights, and it can momentarily “blind” you, making it harder to detect hazards on the road.

In fact, it can take several seconds for your eyes to recover from glare—valuable time when you’re behind the wheel.

👀 Why it matters:
• Reduced visibility and slower reaction times
• Difficulty judging distance and movement
• Increased visual fatigue and discomfort

Transport Canada is currently gathering public input on this exact issue. Their open survey explores how headlight glare affects Canadians and what solutions could improve nighttime driving safety. It takes about 15 minutes and is open to anyone 16+.

📝 Have your say: Help shape safer roads by sharing your experience with headlight glare.

💡 Pro tip: When faced with bright headlights, avoid looking directly at them—focus slightly to the right side of the road to reduce glare.

Happy International Women’s Day 💙 Today, we celebrate the strength, achievements and contributions of women everywhere! As a female-founded, owned and operated Optometry practice since 1984, we’re proud to be part of a legacy of women leading the way in eye care.

In honour of this special day, let’s learn a little bit more about our amazing team of doctors at Bedford Eye Care ⬇️

👁 Dr Cox began working at Bedford Eye Care in 1998. Knowing this office was a great fit for her, Dr. Cox stayed on and became a partner in 2004. She is currently co-chair of the Practice Enhancement committee for the Nova Scotia College of Optometrists.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

👁 Dr Sheppard became an owner doctor at Bedford Eye Care in 2012. She is past Chair of the Board of the Nova Scotia College of Optometrists and provides both routine and post concussion optometric care.

👁 Dr McLeod got her Doctor of Optometry in 2006, worked in private practice in both Ontario and her home province of New Brunswick. She joined the Bedford Eye Care team in 2014, becoming a partner in 2015. She is currently co-chair of the Practice Enhancement committee for the Nova Scotia College of Optometrists.

👁 Dr. Matthews has a special interest in providing pediatric care as she herself got her first pair of glasses at the age of 5. She became a partner in January 2019

👁 Dr McMullin gained wonderful practice experience with training at the Parkland Hospital in Texas, eye care missions in Mexico/Jamaica, and private practice in both rural and urban Nova Scotia before joining the Bedford Eye Care group in 2018 and becoming an owner in 2022

👁 Dr. MacPhee had the privilege of completing extensive clinical rotations in Specialty Contact Lenses in Melbourne, Australia and Ocular Disease in Miami, Florida. She travelled to Senegal in 2018 to provide eye care to the local people.

We are so grateful to our team and entire staff, today and every day 🙌🏼

👁️ Sharper. More Comfortable. More You.

Did you know your eyes work as a team — but most lenses are designed one eye at a time?

✨ HOYA’s Binocular Balancing Technology takes a different approach. Instead of treating each eye separately, it considers how both eyes work together. The result?

✔️ Reduced visual strain
✔️ Improved depth perception
✔️ More stable, comfortable vision
✔️ Easier adaptation to progressive lenses

By optimizing the prescription between both eyes, HOYA lenses create a more natural visual experience — especially for patients with different prescriptions in each eye.

Because great vision isn’t just about clarity — it’s about balance.

Another Monday, another snowfall! Bear with us as we get our parking lot and walkways clear this morning. We’ll be delaying opening until 10am. If you had an early appointment we will make sure to reach out and get you rescheduled!

01/22/2026

Okay but seriously - if you’ve been putting it off, consider this your sign to finally book that appointment. We’re back from the holiday season and January is the perfect time to get that visit scheduled. Your eyes are working hard for you every single day + regular exams are about more than just updating your glasses or contacts.

Why making time for an eye exam matters:

👀 It keeps your prescription accurate so you’re not dealing with headaches, eye strain or blurry vision

👀 It helps detect early signs of eye conditions like glaucoma, macular degeneration and cataracts before they cause serious issues

👀 It can even spot signs of overall health conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes

Your eyes are a window into your health and we’re here to help you take care of them for the long haul. Whether it’s been a year (or a few!), we’re ready when you are!

Did you know that January is national optician month?

Opticians are professionals that do more than fit glasses — they listen, problem-solve, measure with precision, and turn prescriptions into something you can see the world through clearly and confidently.

Behind every great pair of glasses is skill, care, and a whole lot of heart 👓💙

Our skilled opticians are the key to transforming that carefully measured eyeglass prescription from numbers on a piece of paper to a pair of eyeglasses that give you your clearest, most comfortable vision (all while looking 👌 of course).

We truly could not do what we do without them and appreciate them every day.
