Children and youth with disabilities often face barriers to fully participating in school, yet their perspectives on school-based rehabilitation services are rarely centred. This open-access publication describes a meta-aggregative review of the lived experiences of children and youth who receive school-based rehabilitation services.
Systematic selection and critical appraisal resulted in 13 qualitative studies that yielded 53 findings, including that children and youth reported that they want therapists to provide increased autonomy and agency, clearly explain the purpose and goals of therapy, and to address social-emotional and functional needs.
Children and youth value therapy that is individualized, meaningful, enjoyable, scheduled to allow involvement in school routines, includes them in goal setting, and enables building social connections and inclusion at school. These insights can help support more inclusive, child-centred practices!
