The Mood Disorders Society of Canada (MDSC) was launched in 2001 to provide people with mood disorders, their families and caregivers a strong, cohesive voice at the national level on issues relating to mental health and mental illness. MDSC has evolved to become one of Canada's best-connected mental health NGOs and aims to improve access to treatment, inform research, shape program development and government policy to improve the quality of life for people affected by mood disorders. The Society fulfills its mandate through an active partnership approach that engages like-minded organizations in the public, private and voluntary sectors. MDSC is engaged on an ongoing basis in a wide range of projects and initiatives designed to support the inclusion of persons with disabling mental illnesses in Canadian society and it has taken a lead proactive role in public policy and program development in many capacities on the national stage.

Negative thoughts often creep in slowly, so we may not even realize how skewed our perspective has become.

The more we ruminate on these thoughts, the more negative they get. Just like memorizing something for a test, when we think about something repeatedly, we can recall the thoughts even faster.

📣 New research suggests that anti-inflammatory treatments may help treat a specific subtype of depression, but only for individuals with an overactive immune system.

📘 The study found that when patients are selected based on elevated inflammation markers, these medications can reduce both overall depressive symptoms and anhedonia (the inability to feel pleasure).

📢 This insight may help explain why earlier clinical trials showed mixed results: many did not account for a person’s inflammatory status.

As research advances, more personalized approaches to mental health treatment may become possible.

Anti-inflammatory treatments may help restore the ability to feel pleasure in some depressed individuals. A new study finds these medications reduce anhedonia and symptom severity, but only in those with active inflammation.

Mental health doesn’t look the same for everyone. And it shouldn’t be boxed into stereotypes.

🗣️ For too long, we’ve heard messages like “men don’t cry” or “women are just emotional.” These assumptions don’t just miss the truth, they can delay support, silence people, and deepen shame.

📣 Depression, anxiety, and other mental health challenges can show up differently across genders. Some people withdraw. Some become irritable. Some overwork. Some mask their pain behind humor or strength. None of these experiences are “less real.”

💙 When we move beyond stereotypes, we make space for real conversations. We allow people to seek help without feeling like they’ve failed some social expectation.

If you care about mental health, your own or someone else’s, this is an important read. It’s a reminder that understanding begins with listening, not labeling. 👉https://drdianemcintosh.com/avoiding-mental-illness-stereotypes-across-genders/

Let’s keep challenging stigma and creating room for everyone to be seen and supported. 💙
