🎧 The World is Louder Than Ever — Protect Your Hearing This October, and Every Month! 🔊

From lawnmowers and city traffic to concerts and earbuds, noise is all around us — and it’s getting louder every year. Constant exposure to high volume can take a serious toll on your hearing, often before you even realize it.

👂 October is National Protect Your Hearing Month — the perfect time to give your ears the attention they deserve. Here are 8 simple ways to keep your hearing safe:

1️⃣ Know your noise levels – Anything over 85 dB (like heavy traffic or lawnmowers) can damage your hearing after just a couple of hours. Louder than that? You’re at risk in minutes!
2️⃣ Check the volume around you – Use a free smartphone sound meter app to see how loud your surroundings really are.
3️⃣ Turn it down – Keep your earbuds or headphones at 50% volume or less. If you need to turn it up to hear, it’s already too loud.
4️⃣ Don’t blast music to block out noise – Try noise-cancelling headphones or earplugs instead of cranking the volume.
5️⃣ Wear earplugs in loud places – Concerts, sports games, power tools — they all add up. Custom earplugs offer even better comfort and protection.
6️⃣ Follow workplace safety rules – Always use hearing protection if you work around loud equipment or machinery.
7️⃣ Keep your distance – The farther you are from loud sounds (like fireworks or speakers), the safer your hearing.
8️⃣ Don’t ignore early signs of hearing loss – The sooner you act, the more hearing you can protect. Most people wait 7 years too long to get help!

This September, in honor of World Alzheimer’s Month, our team at HEAR Belleville, was grateful to take part in Dementia Friendly Communities Training, led by Melissa Whalen, Public Education Coordinator with the Alzheimer Society.

We learned how to provide even more inclusive, compassionate care for those living with dementia and their caregivers in our community.

Thank you, Melissa, for your incredible community education efforts and for helping local organizations like ours make a real difference.
