Tension and trigger points in the upper trapezius muscle can refer pain to the jaw/temple area. This referred pain can sometimes be perceived as TMJ pain . Dry needling is a technique that involves inserting thin needles into trigger points in muscles to relieve pain and improve function.
Research indicates that dry needling can effectively reduce pain and alter the status of trigger points in the upper trapezius muscle . By releasing tension in the trapezius muscle through dry needling, it may be possible to indirectly alleviate TMJ symptoms that originate from muscle imbalances or referred pain from the neck and shoulder region.
