Last night, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe adopted a landmark resolution calling for a ban on conversion practices across the region.

These practices aim to change, suppress, or erase people’s sexual orientation or gender identity, and they cause serious harm.

The resolution sets out clear steps for governments: banning conversion practices in law, supporting survivors, collecting data, and raising public awareness.

Despite heavy pressure from organised anti-trans groups to exclude trans people from the text, the Assembly held firm and passed the resolution with a strong majority.

The standard is now clear. Conversion practices must end. What happens next depends on whether governments are willing to act.

For survivors of conversion therapy, a new pride flag design has been created with the partnership between the Canadian, CT Survivors Connect and the American, Conversion Therapy Survivor Network.

There is meaning behind each colour, and the flag is a statement of survival, strength and authenticity.

In Canada conversion therapy has been illegal since January 7, 2022, yet there are some faith-based groups that continue to use many different types of abhorrent, unregulated, debunked and damaging practices on vulnerable child, youth and adults under their influence. They do this based on the misconception that sexual attraction and gender are parts of a human that can be altered, fixed, or changed to align with their skewed beliefs that are not based in science or evidence, but in misogyny and patriarchal culture. It..."starts with an assumption that being Two-Spirit*, le***an, gay, bisexual, transgender, or q***r (2S/LGBTQ) is bad, wrong, or just unwanted."

This practice happens around the world, and yes, most definitely here in the Western Valley of New Brunswick.

On January 7th, the International Day to End Conversion Therapy, we are asking that those who read this post, take some time out of thier day to learn about conversion or reparation 'therapy', by visiting the Canadian-based Conversion Therapy Survivors Connect website to educate themselves on what conversion therapy is, listen to the voices of survivors, and for allies to be aware that the trauma suffered by these practices may be affecting someone without you knowing. It is complex and does not always look the same way in survivors.
