NSHN is deeply honoured to receive a generous donation of an abalone shell (smudge bowl), traditional medicines, and a selection of books for our Long-Term Care Home.

These meaningful gifts will be thoughtfully used as we develop a program to support Indigenous cultural activities, including cleansing, learning, and prayer. This work represents an important step in creating space for cultural understanding and connection.

We recognize this as a meaningful learning journey for both staff and residents, offering an opportunity to deepen understanding, strengthen relationships, and further embrace Indigenous teachings and cultural practices within our home.

A heartfelt thank you to Sharon Johnson for this generous donation, made in honour of her mother, Bernadette Corbiere Nahmiwan.

Chi-Miigwetch, Sharon, for your kindness, generosity, and for helping us move forward in this important work.

In celebration of National Volunteer Week, North Shore Health Network (NSHN) was proud to host a Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon and Education Session on April 21, 2026.

This special event brought together our dedicated volunteers for a day of recognition, connection, and learning. Volunteers participated in education sessions on key topics including hand hygiene, PPE protocols, wheelchair and mealtime safety, as well as NSHN’s annual patient safety priority—Identification. Additional sessions covered Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) requirements and Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, with a focus on gender identity.

We were also pleased to have our BPSO champions in attendance, sharing valuable information and education on the areas they champion, including palliative care, dining, BPSO and Clinical Pathways, and Responsive Behaviours/BSO.

These important learning opportunities help strengthen patient safety, support regulatory compliance, and foster a more inclusive care environment for all.

We extend our sincere thanks to everyone who helped organize and deliver this meaningful event.

Most importantly, we recognize and celebrate our volunteers—your ongoing dedication, compassion, and commitment make a lasting difference. You are a vital part of the care we provide and the communities we serve.

Thank you for all that you do. 💙

NSHN Launches Victim Services Programming at Blind River Site

Blind River, ON – Through strong collaboration between the Province of Ontario, the North Shore Health Network (NSHN), the Town of Blind River, Mississauga First Nation, Ontario Provincial Police - North East Region, Huron Shores Family Health Team, and the Ontario Network of Sexual Assault/Domestic Violence Treatment Centres, the North Shore Health Network – Blind River Site is proud to announce the launch of Victim Services Programming.

This new program provides sexual assault evidence kit collection and compassionate, trauma-informed support for survivors—closer to home.

Historically, these services were only accessible in Sault Ste. Marie and Sudbury, creating significant barriers for individuals seeking care. Travel logistics, cost, safety concerns, and timing often added to the trauma and, in some cases, prevented people from accessing care when they needed it most.

Survivors accessing care at NSHN can expect:
• Care delivered with discretion, respect, and without judgement
• The option to receive care without automatically involving police
• You are in control of whether or not to contact police
• Access to trained staff 24/7, 365 days a year
• Full control over the sexual assault evidence kit process
• Access to new, comfortable clothing at no cost if clothing is collected as evidence
• Timely access to medications that can help prevent sexually transmitted infections, including HIV
• No cost for services (available to survivors aged 16+)
• Connection to local support services and resources close to home

To support awareness, informational cards are being distributed to communities, secondary schools, and social service providers across the North Shore.

If you have experienced sexual assault, support is available.
📞 Call 705-356-2265 or 1-888-425-0321

If you are in immediate danger, please call 911.

NSHN is seeking candidates with a strong vision for the future of rural health care and a commitment to supporting high-quality, compassionate services across the North Shore.

NSHN is governed by a skills-based Board of Directors, with representation from the diverse geographic communities it serves, as well as from Indigenous and Francophone communities. The Board plays a vital role in guiding the organization’s strategic direction and ensuring it continues to meet the evolving health needs of the region.

The Nominating Committee is particularly interested in hearing from members of the Francophone community who live, own property, or conduct business along the North Shore—from Spanish to Echo Bay. However, all interested and qualified individuals are encouraged to apply.

NSHN anticipates three (3) vacancies on its Board of Directors. Directors bring a wide range of backgrounds, skills, and lived experiences that contribute to strong governance and community representation.
