Ankle taping is a commonly used technique in physiotherapy for various purposes, primarily focused on providing support, stability, and protection to the ankle joint. Here are some of the key reasons why ankle taping is employed in physiotherapy:

1️⃣Prevention of Injuries:

Physiotherapists often use ankle taping as a preventive measure to reduce the risk of ankle injuries, especially in athletes or individuals involved in sports that require a lot of lateral movements or jumping.

2️⃣Support and Stability:

In cases of ankle injuries, such as sprains or strains, taping is used to provide additional support to the injured ligaments and muscles. This helps in stabilizing the joint and promoting a more controlled range of motion during the healing process.

3️⃣Reducing Swelling and Inflammation:

Ankle taping can provide a compressive effect, which helps in reducing swelling and inflammation associated with acute injuries. This compression aids in minimizing the extent of tissue damage and accelerates the healing process. It can also help alleviate pain by restricting certain movements and reducing stress on injured tissues.

4️⃣Joint Alignment:

Physiotherapists may use ankle taping to assist in correcting biomechanical issues or misalignments in the ankle joint. This is particularly relevant for conditions where there is an imbalance in muscle activity or joint positioning.

5️⃣Pain Relief:

Taping can help alleviate pain by restricting certain movements and reducing stress on injured tissues. This can contribute to a decrease in pain levels, allowing individuals to engage in rehabilitative exercises with more comfort.

6️⃣Rehabilitation Exercises:

Taping can be used to facilitate specific rehabilitation exercises. By providing support and alignment, it enables individuals to perform therapeutic exercises with better form and reduced risk of further injury.

Sore Hips? Have you been told you have Bursitis or tendonitis?

This is a common area of discomfort, and it often responds well to gently moving and activating the muscles involved.

If you have pain on the outer part of your hip, try these two quick exercises for some relief.

1. Lie on your side with the sore side up. Using a strap or belt gently bend your knee, and bring your leg backwards to stretch the outer part of the hip and leg. Allow the leg to drop toward the floor, while keeping the knee pointing ahead.
Move until gentle tension is felt along the top/outer thigh and leg. Hold for 30 s and repeat 3-4 times.

2. Straighten the leg out, and stack it on top of the bottom leg. Use the strap to assist as you lift the leg upward, keeping the hips stacked. Hold for 10-20 s and repeat 10 times.

Once these exercises feel comfortable, you are ready to move on to some more advanced work.

Remember, movement is medicine!!
