🌿 Backyard Foraging Series - Day 9🌿
⚫Plantain⚫
• Identify- broadleaf-broad oval shaped smooth leaves with parallel veins, long thin cone like flower shoots
- narrowleaf- narrow lance shaped leaves with 3-5 parallel veins, shorter and tighter flower shoot
- both used interchangeably but broadleaf has a milder flavor
• Properties- anti-inflammatory, promotes wound healing, digestive support, oral health
• Uses-
• young leaves can be eaten fresh or used in tea (larger, older leaves get bitter) for digestive support. Mild natural laxative as they contain psyllium. Can also sooth pain caused by ulcers by soothing mebranes with its high concentration of mucilage.
• infuse leaves in oil or use fresh as a poultice for soothing skin irritation and drawing out toxins. Great for bee stings, big bites, poison ivy, rashes.
• gargle tea for toothaches, gingivitis, or mouth sores
