Yes, it has been a very nice summer with lots of ☀️
The flip side to this is there has been no rain. For our farmer friends, this is impacting the growth of their product, their business and their overall livelihood.
- they are putting out extra expenses in fuel & water
- their produce is wilting in the field
- produce that is surviving is smaller than normal and when you charge by the pound, they are producing more and earning less
- they have had to lay off staff to make up for the increased expenses and decreased income
- they are working night shifts to get out of the heat, and water the plants so the sun doesn’t suck up the precious water that gets delivered to the plants
How can you support:
- shop directly with your local farmer either at their farm store or farmers market
- buy items in bulk to store, can or freeze through the winter. Examples: tomatoes for canning, cucumbers for relish or pickling, beans for pickling or freezing, peppers for freezing (great for soups & chilis), beets for pickling, onions & garlic for storing
- Buy their canned goods or frozen items
- Offer to volunteer on the farm
Note sure what to do with bulk items or need help storing or canning. If you buy from a farm I’m offering free recipes, canning directions or storing options for produce for anyone who needs assistance.
