AMD is one of the leading causes of vision loss in adults over 60. It affects the macula, which is the part of the eye responsible for sharp and central vision, essential for reading, driving, and recognizing faces.
Common symptoms to watch for:
• Blurred or fuzzy central vision
• Straight lines appearing wavy or distorted
• Difficulty reading or seeing fine details
• Trouble recognizing faces
• Dark, blurry, or empty spots in the center of vision
• Needing brighter light for close-up tasks
There are two types of AMD: wet and dry AMD. Dry AMD is the most common form, with gradual vision changes, while wet AMD is less common but more severe and is caused by abnormal blood vessel growth and leakage.
Risk increases with age, genetics, smoking, poor diet, and certain health conditions. Symptoms can start subtly, which is why regular eye exams are key for early detection and management.
