Beginning January 1, 2019:

Drivers convicted of distracted driving under the new laws will be punished with a license suspension, heavier fines as well as demerit points.

The severity of the punishment increases with the number of subsequent offences committed:

First offence: 3 days license suspension and $1,000 fine + 3 demerit points
Second offence: 7 days license suspension and $2,000 fine + 6 demerit points
Three or more offences: 30 days license suspension, $3,000 fine and 6 demerit points
When driving, you are not permitted to use hand-held communication and entertainment devices or view display screens unrelated to the driving task, with the some minor exceptions:

Calling 9-1-1 in an emergency situation
When the driver is lawfully parked or has safely pulled off the roadway and is not impeding traffic.
