My name is Megan Carruthers. I am one of the leading child and youth clinicians in British Columbia, with over 30 years of experience in the field. I am currently serving on the committee responsible for the forthcoming 2nd edition of the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Textbook. Additionally, I am actively involved in regulating the counselling profession within the province.
It has come to my attention that false, defamatory statements have been publicly posted regarding me. These statements suggest that I am violent, aggressive, or have mental health issues—claims that are entirely untrue. The posts misrepresent my professional conduct and have been falsely reported to multiple agencies, constituting fraudulent activity.
The public post in question, issued by the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors (BCACC), pertains to professional work I have been conducting over the past two years. I was unable to respond to the post at the time due to the matter involving school-related jurisdiction, which falls outside BCACC’s regulatory authority. This work reflects my professional contributions and is unrelated to any of the false claims circulating online.
I am also a victim under the Victims of Crime Act and the Public Safety Act, and during the ongoing court proceedings in which I am a victim, I have experienced continued harassment and false reporting, and even physical attacks. These attacks do not reflect my professional or personal character, nor do they relate in any way to my work with children, youth, and vulnerable populations.
I did not attend a recent meeting referenced in these posts because it was outside the proper jurisdiction and related to matters now before the BC Supreme Court, concerning significant regulation issues within the counselling profession and the inclusion of School Counselling in the BC Teachers’ Collective Agreement. The posts misrepresent these events as personal or disciplinary matters when, in fact, they are part of broader legal and professional responsibilities.
The Attorney General of BC, the Honourable Nina Krieger, the Ombudsman, and the Human Rights Tribunal are all aware of these ongoing issues. I have acted throughout with integrity, prioritizing the welfare of children, adherence to legal and ethical standards, and protection of the counselling profession.
Any attempts to misrepresent or defame me publicly, including framing me as having mental health issues or being violent, are false and will be addressed appropriately. My professional record, public work, and legal responsibilities stand as a testament to my dedication and ethical practice.
Any individuals or parties who may have acted in bad faith based on false information are encouraged to revisit and correct any errors in judgment or instances where misinformation was shared. Spreading misinformation can lead to systemic errors, disrupt institutional harmony, and cause serious repercussions for professionals in the government mental health sector….which can equally impact and affect the public, families….and children.
