Coming at you with some Thursday inspiration!
It can be too easy to get stuck in thinking that therapy is a one-stop shop for healing. Though this might be true for some, often it takes years of reflecting, sitting in discomfort, sifting through the mess, trying different strategies, taking breaks, and experiencing (and re-experiencing) all of the heavy emotions that come with coping with whatever it is you have survived. Sometimes, healing means not trying therapy at all (and that’s okay too!). Whether it’s your first time reaching out for support and or your fifteenth, here are some tips for getting the most out of therapy:
1. It is okay if it is not the right time for you. You do not need to push yourself if you are not ready. Healing is something that ebbs and flows.
2. Therapy is meant to be a safe space… and it’s also TOUGH. Therapy can bring up a lot of different thoughts, emotions, physical responses, and memories. Yes, these are so painful. Remember that these are also a part of making sense of what you have lived through.
3. Making changes in your life doesn’t stop when sessions do. Healing continues when you practice patience and kindness with yourself, focus on small steps like taking care of your body, or lean on those around you.
4. It may take quite a long time to work through the experiences and challenges you have faced. When we experience a big change in our life, trauma, or a mental health challenge, our brains adapt in order to protect us. Sometimes, the ways we adapt become unhelpful and we need several years to begin unlearning these.
5. It may take support from several therapists & healthcare professionals (in addition to loved ones) to process and heal overtime. E.g. it may take a referral to a different service or coming back to therapy after some practice to fully address different goals you have.
6. It’s okay if you’re not vibing with your therapist! If it’s not working, be honest. They will help you to get to someone who is able to create a space of healing and understanding that is right for you.
