On September 7, 2023; World Duchenne Awareness Day will take place. The 7th day of the 9th month has been chosen to represent the 79 exons in the dystrophin gene. Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy affects 1 in every 5,000 male births, and 1 in 50 million female births, there about 20,000 new cases each year. It occurs across all races and cultures.
Duchenne results in progressive loss of strength and is caused by a mutation in the gene that encodes for dystrophin. Because dystrophin is absent, the muscle cells are easily damaged. The progressive muscle weakness leads to serious medical problems. Often by the teen years those affected loose the ability to walk and must rely on a wheelchair, they will also face issues particularly relating to the heart and lungs. Young men with Duchenne typically live into their late twenties.
Duchenne can be passed from parent to child, but approximately 35% of cases occur because of a random spontaneous mutation. In other words, it can affect anyone. Currently there is some great research but still no approved treatment for all and no cure for Duchenne. It is 100% fatal.

*ASK YOUR PHARMACIST*

Question: My family is travelling this spring break. What can we do to reduce some unpleasant symptoms such as diarrhea while travelling?

Answer: Travelling can be tough on our gut: new foods, different water systems and different time zones may cause some discomfort.

Taking probiotics before travelling and continuing to take them while you’re away may help. Don’t forget to pack some essentials for each of your family members in your travel bag. Pack items such as antacids, pain relievers and antidiarrhea medications. It’s a good idea to speak to your Pharmasave pharmacist about which medications to bring and to learn about medication safety while travelling, including appropriate times to take them.

Here are some travel tips:
Use bottled water only, boil water at least one minute before using it, or bring along a specialized water filter that removes parasites
Don't brush your teeth, wash dishes, fruits, or vegetables, or use ice cubes made with water that hasn't been purified
Properly wash raw fruits and vegetables before you eat them
Wash your hands with soap and water several times a day
Don't swallow water when you're swimming or bathing
