The bacteria found in plaque can irritate your gums and lead to early gum disease, called gingivitis.

You might have gingivitis if you're experiencing mild inflammation of your gums, red or swollen gums, plaque build-up, bad breath, gums that bleed easily, and tooth sensitivity. But because it often doesn't cause pain, many patients have no idea they have gingivitis until we tell them.

Got a toothache? Here are a few things you can try to get some relief from the pain while you wait to see your dentist.

Try rinsing your mouth with warm water and flossing between your teeth to dislodge any food particles that may be causing the discomfort. If the tooth has been injured, try applying a cold compress on your face near the area. You may also get relief with over-the-counter pain medications taken as directed. Do NOT place aspirin directly on the tooth or gum as it will cause a chemical burn and will not help your toothache.

Call us right away at (905) 495-9985 if you develop any of these symptoms: the toothache becomes more severe, there are signs of infection such as inflammation, swelling, and redness in the area, you develop a fever, or you have trouble breathing or swallowing.

People often think the only one bothered by their cold sore is themselves, and while that’s generally true, cold sores are caused by a contagious virus. This virus could be spread to others during a dental appointment. Additionally, depending on the cold sore location, it can be difficult and sometimes painful to keep your mouth open for a dental appointment.

It’s tricky to reach your back teeth when brushing. Even though it’s a bit more effort, it’s so important to brush your back teeth properly.

Make sure that you are using the correct size brush for your mouth. Try closing your mouth, and shifting your jaw to the side, to reach the cheek side of those back molars. That will give you a bit more room. You can also tilt the brush at a 45-degree angle to reach the very back surface of your last tooth.

You may find that an electric toothbrush helps you reach those difficult areas more easily.

It takes a bit of trial and error to find a method that works best for you.
