Iron is an essential building block for new blood. Patients who are deficient may develop anemia.

When one is deficient in iron the body struggles to function .

The following symptoms can develop:
-headaches
-feeling tired all the time
-fainting or near fainting
-body aches and pains
- poor sleep or Insomnia
-mood changes and irritability
-thinning and losing hair
- shortness of breath even with light activity
-Intense cravings

The bottom line is that if you are iron deficient it’s almost impossible to eat right, sleep right, move right and manage stress right. I typically make sure my patients are first repleted before I get into lifestyle changes.

Menstruating women tend to be bar far the most common cause but malabsorption, poor diet and other causes of blood loss are also possibilities.

Oral iron supplement can be very effective if taken , but in a lot of patients cause GI side effects like constipation, nausea and abdomjnal pain.

IV iron is very safe and very effective. Iron levels become normal soon afterwards and symptoms go away and usually patients feel like a new person!

Physical stress like running, weight lifting , cold plunges , sauna and fasting activate our survival genes. Emotional stress and isolation on the other hand causes increase chance of all cause death 3-10 fold. This is why mindfulness is a pillar of lifestyle medicine.

I was humbled and honoured to speak at the 6th annual Plantbasedcanada conference in downtown Toronto.

I shared evidence a whole food plant based diet and its role in reversal of chronic disease. Also shared actually patient cases of disease reversal through lifestyle changes and the growing momentum of Lifestyle medicine around the world.

It was a full house with passionate individuals.

Great day of apple picking ! Hit a lot of lifestyle pillars now that I look back :)
* Nature:Outdoors- reduces stress cortisol levels
*Sunlight- great source of Vitamin D. The active form of Vitamin D is the most powerful antioxidant in your body reducing chance of cancer and autoimmune diseases. Northern climates have higher rates of Multiple Sclerosis, Rheumatism, and certain cancers.
*Social engagement- it was nice to spend time with family friends in a positive setting. This decreases stress cortisol levels.
*Whole food plant based - Apples like other fruits , veggies, legumes are high in water weight, fiber, vitamins. It’s interesting how majority of the planet is water, majority of the human body is water and so are majority of fruits, veggies and legumes. This diet is meant for us and is in synergy with life. Everyday I see my patients lose weight, reduce BP, reduce cholesterol, get better sleep and mobility through eating this way !
*Walking- just 150 mins of moderate intensity exercise a week can reduce your chance of chronic disease

One day of apple picking accomplished all of these things!
