🍪 Toy Spotlight! 🍪
The Melissa & Doug Cut & Bake Cookies set is a kid favourite! It looks yummy and is tons of fun! Our therapist’s love it because of everything we can target:
🗣️ Vocabulary (cookie, spatula, oven, cut, bake)
🧩 Sequencing (first cut, then bake, then eat!)
🎯 Following directions (put 2 cookies on the tray, add sprinkles)
👫 Social skills (taking turns “serving” cookies)
Play + speech goals = the perfect recipe!

Toy Spotlight ✨ Bringing playtime to life, one favourite at a time! 🧸⭐

👋🏽 Hi!
🌎 I’ve been told by many that I am not the adventurous type, but I beg to differ. I go on adventures all the time with my students!
💭 One way I do this is by encouraging students to use their imagination through reading. Reading and hearing stories introduces them to new ideas and experiences. They learn to form thoughts and opinions in their minds, and in no time, they become interesting storytellers, creative writers and innovative thinkers.
✈️ From a sunken pirate ship to an enchanted forest to the streets of Toronto, my students have taken me on some of the most exciting adventures of my life. And to think… it was all through the power of imagination!
🍰 When I’m not exploring the world with my students, I enjoy doing yoga, watching movies and eating cake.
🗣 Each week we’ll introduce you to another one of our awesome clinicians! Stay tuned!

👋🏼 Hi!
😁 My name is Julia, and I love supporting kids and their families. I am so happy to see a child’s pride in their accomplishment as they achieve a communication goal.
✨ I grew up in a small town outside of London, Ontario. I was inspired by my parents and siblings in the ways they give to support others. My interest in speech-language pathology began at age 10 - my beautiful younger sister, among the many amazing parts of who she is, is a person with Down Syndrome. I loved seeing her learn, grow and develop with the support of the SLP who came to our home.
❤️ The loves of my life are my husband and two kiddos - being a mom has impacted my practice in wanting to support busy families to maximize the time that they have to incorporate speech and language goals into everyday life. I also get ideas from my kids about what kids are loving these days! I love being with my family, friends, playing piano, taking photos, hiking and days at the beach.

Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) use play as a natural and engaging way to work on communication goals, seamlessly integrating learning into fun activities. Through games, pretend play, and interactive toys, they target specific skills like vocabulary, articulation, or social interaction without making it feel like work. By designing play-based sessions, SLPs create a motivating environment where children are eager to participate, often unaware they are learning. Parents might see these sessions as “just play,” but every activity is carefully planned to address individualized therapy goals. This approach makes therapy enjoyable and effective, fostering progress while building trust and connection with the child.

👋🏼 Hi!
❤️ I’m Rachael and I LOVE working with children! It has been a passion of mine since I was a little girl. I really enjoy working on your child’s goals in a fun and energetic way!
🏫 Something most people don’t know about me is that I have scoliosis (curve of the spine). I wore a back brace for a year in high school. This really helped me come out of my shell and have fun in life. I didn’t want people laughing at me so I made it fun for everyone!
✈️ Some of my personal interests are hanging out with my family, raising money for multiple charities, and camping in the summer and fall! I also love travelling and can’t wait to jump on an airplane.
🗣 Each week we’ll introduce you to another one of our awesome clinicians! Stay tuned!

“Did you know?”

🗣️Vocabulary Explosion: By the age of 2, children typically know between 200-1,000 words, depending on their environment and exposure to language. This vocabulary expansion is often accompanied by clearer articulation of simple words.

🍌Simplified Speech Patterns: At 2 years old, children frequently simplify words by omitting sounds or syllables, like saying “tat” for “hat” or “nana” for “banana.” This is a normal part of speech development.

👄Consonant Sounds: By age 2, children generally begin to articulate some basic consonant sounds clearly, such as “m,” “b,” “p,” and “t,” although many other sounds may still be hard to produce accurately.

🧍Speech Intelligibility: At 2 years old, a child’s speech is often about 50% intelligible to strangers. This means that while parents can usually understand their child, others may have difficulty interpreting what is being said.

🚛 Speech Milestones Vary: While the average child is expected to start using two-word combinations (e.g., “big truck”) around 18 months to 2 years old, there is considerable variability. Some children may be ahead in articulation, while others may still be refining their speech sounds.

✨ These milestones highlight the exciting and varied nature of speech development in young children! If you are concerned about your child’s speech and language skills, contact us for more information on how a speech language pathologist can support you.

11/19/2024

An articulation disorder is a speech disorder that involves difficulties with the production of speech sounds. This can manifest in various ways, including substituting one sound for another, omitting sounds, distorting sounds, or adding extra sounds. These difficulties can affect the clarity and intelligibility of an individual’s speech.

Articulation disorders can affect people of all ages, from children to adults. In children, these disorders are often developmental in nature, meaning they arise as a part of the natural process of learning speech and language. However, they can also be caused by factors such as hearing impairment, neurological conditions, or structural issues with the mouth or palate.

If you have any concerns about your child’s articulation or if your child is 3 years or older and difficult to understand, contact us for intervention. In some cases, the correction of these errors may be quite quick if the child is physically ready to make the correct sounds.
