Nutritional Coaching with Caitlin McQuaite

Nutritional Coaching with Caitlin McQuaite As a Registered Holistic Nutritionist I can guide you in giving your body the nutrients it needs to achieve or maintain vibrant health.

Poor digestion or improper eating habits can lead to a number of unpleasant symptoms as your body struggles to maintain health without essential nutrients. A Registered Holistic Nutritionist (RHN) can help you make sure that you are eating to support your unique needs to help you achieve or maintain vibrant health. What works for one person may not work for another as there is no "one-size-fits-all" diet that works for everyone. Some health complaints thate are often seen by RHN's are
-anxiety
-skin problems
-bloating
-digestive problems
-insomnia
-high cholesterol
-acne
-and much more

Many health complaints can have a nutritional component and what you eat has a direct effect (either positive or negative) on your overall health

Anyone finding that their eating habits have taken a turn for the worse or that you constantly want sugary comfort foods?

It can help to have something fast, easy, and appetizing to substitute (3 suggestions below).
I would never recommend giving up your favorite foods or avoiding deserts, but sugary foods devoid of nutrients can creep into our diet almost unnoticed. It can help to have easy, appetizing alternatives to snack on.

If I want ice cream, for example, I have a couple of alternatives that can curb the craving and also provide nutrients and fiber. They also tend to be less addictive (in my opinion). Foods with a lot of added sugars can be hard to stop eating. A serving of ice cream tends to be half a cup. Have you ever measured your ice cream? Half a cup seems like nothing!
--------------------------- Alternatives-------------------------------
1) Frozen mango chunks. Buy at the grocery store, keep in your freezer, eat as a snack when you want something sweet.

2) Frozen banana. Buy, peel, freeze. You can slice them if you want, (BEFORE you freeze them) but I tend to just gnaw on them. (You may wish to be more refined.)

3) Frozen blueberries, yogurt, stevia, vanilla. This one takes a bit more prep (about 2 minutes). I find the frozen blueberries chill the yogurt and give it an ice cream like quality. (OK, I'm not delusional it is NOT ice cream, but if you are talking about something you eat daily or multiple times daily, this is definitely a healthier option). I use half cup blueberries half cup 2% yogurt, a dash of vanilla, and stevia* to taste.

I've recently started brewing my own Kombucha and fallen in love with it! It has actually become a bit of an obsession. For those unfamiliar with Kombucha, it is a fermented tea, supposedly rich in probiotics. Since much of the information is anecdotal I can't make any professional claims about its potential health benefits, but it tastes great, and is easy to make and definitely a better option than soft drinks. To make it, you brew sweet tea and add the culture, called a SCOBY which stands for "symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast) and let if ferment up to a month. You can bottle it and flavor it; some of my favorite flavors are hibiscus (I added a hibiscus tea bag for a few days after bottling the finished product) and lemon-ginger. I will soon have some mature SCOBYs for sale! Check out pictures below. SCOBYs can look sort of strange, but I think they are fascinating!

Household cleaners can be quite toxic, but there are alternatives! Vinegar and baking soda work quite well (If you don't like the vinegar smell, a few drops of an essential oil like lavender helps) or you can check out the Environmental Working Group has a list of eco friendly cleaners. Government agencies and independent research institutions have not adequately evaluated the safety of numerous substances found in cleaning products.

Many people are deficient in magnesium, a mineral needed for the utilization of vitamin D, formation of strong bones, calm mood, good sleep and many other aspects of health. Below is a recipe for a delicious soup that provides a good amount of magnesium, which is found in abundance in beans and leafy greens.

The recipe is in 2 parts. The directions are on the second page, so don't forget to look at both :)

Good nutrition can have huge effects on physical and mental health
"I can't buy the argument that it's too costly for schools to provide good nutrition for their students. I found that one cost will reduce another. I don't have the vandalism. I don't have the litter. I don't have the need for high security." "We've got to stop using our most precious commodity -- our kids -- to make extra money."

You will notice that the hallways are different in another respect. They aren't lined with soft drink and junk food machines. Then check out the cafeteria. There is no smell of grease. Super Simple Miso Soup
(Perfect for nights when you don’t want/don’t have time to cook)
NOTE: This makes one portion. To serve more people, multiply quantities by the number of people
2 cups broccoli, chopped
6 shrimp, shelled (if you are using frozen shrimp, thaw them first
1-2 tablespoons miso.
1 package buckwheat, whole wheat or other wholegrain ramen (available at health food stores)
1 tsp fresh ginger grated or chopped very fine
small handful chopped bell pepper.
Put everything EXCEPT MISO in pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil and boil for 3-4 minutes or until noodles are soft, broccoli is bright green and shrimp are bright pink.
Remove pot from heat and let stand for a minute.
Stir in the miso, and serve.
Miso is a fermented food, and therefore contains beneficial bacterial. You don't want to boil the miso because it kills off these bacteria.

Did you know that "whole wheat" bread can be just a bit of whole wheat and the rest white flour?
Look for labels that say 100% whole wheat.
How else are food labels fooling you?
