Hey you! B Special here, telling you that I get my massages done by McNab Equine Massage. I even have myself booked for some good stretches on race day this Saturday at The Loop! Because you wouldn’t want to run a mile without stretching, would you?

Karlee will be giving free stretches this race day! This is an opportunity for the horse to get properly stretched out before a race, and an opportunity for owners to learn how to safely stretch out their horses without causing injury to the horse or themselves.

This is also an opportunity to talk to Karlee about some issues they are having with their horse, whether it is a muscular injury, lower limb injury, scar tissue that could possibly be affecting the horses movement, and behaviour issues that can have direct physical correlations to the body.

Hey friends! When I was a kid, I had two of the best horses a kid could have, I loved them with all my heart. But they did have their issues as well, and me being a kid, I didn’t quite understand what the problem could be other than it was my saddle, it was always my saddle. Every time I would try the trot to canter transition, they would toss me, or at least try to throw me off. But I would also ride my pony ba****ck and he would still try to toss me in the trot to canter transition. Nowadays I look back, and I am thinking there could have been other issues going on.
From what I have learned, it could have been tightness in the jaw, constant pressure from my unsteady hands could have been the issue. Other causes could be head trauma (which my pony had an indent on his face from being kicked as a baby), another cause can be tack issues, abscess or tumours in the mouth, biting of the tongue, or over collection.
Another cause for them trying to toss me in the trot to canter transition could be a gelding scar. Extra scar tissue down there will invade the abdominal muscles and will impede mobility each time the abdominal muscles are engaged. Now don’t ever blame the vet. Even in the hands of the best, scar tissue can intrude deeply in the cremaster muscle. Which is the muscle responsible for the raising and lowering of their…”second brain”.
Now that I have learned this, all I want to do is hop into a Time Machine, and just check. I’m not saying that what I have learned could have been the problem, but I am also a person who believes, there could be another problem, and another solution. And if I did hop into my trusty Time Machine, and go back and work with them, maybe I wouldn’t have fallen off so many times. 🤷‍♀️

HI!!!! My name is Karlee McNab, and last month I completed an 80 hour program offered by The School of Equine Massage and Rehabilitation Therapies, and am now a Certified Equine Massage Therapist. My studies include: Massage theory and technique, scar tissue development theory and reduction technique, lower limb swelling reduction, hoof heat reduction, behaviour issues with direct physical correlations, deep fascia release, movement of CSF, colic relief technique, equine anatomy, assessment of the body and joints of the horse, the health check, hydrotherapy and stretches.

A little about me, I have been around horses my entire life. I have experienced quite a few riding disciplines. I dont ride much anymore, but when I do, it’s only for fun. You know, take the old boy out with just a bridle and see if he’s going to toss me. I am currently a licensed groom for Standardbred Canada and I’m loving every minute of it. I also have an obsession with going to the tack store and buying things that I don’t need and will never use. Seriously, I could run my own little tack store. But I won’t, because I’m a tack hoarder.

To be honest, if I went back in time and told myself what I was going to be doing when I grew up, I would have slapped my older self in the face. But over time I have come to realize that I connect a whole lot better with horses while I’m on the ground, rather than on their back. So when the opportunity came up, I went for it, knowing that this could possibly be something I could do for the rest of my life. Knowing that there is so much more room to grow, branch out, and learn new things.
