Important information to help detect meningitis. Please share 🌟

With the prevalence of the potentially life-threatening meningococcal infection at its highest during the winter, the PHA is calling for people to make themselves aware of the all signs and symptoms of the condition, as a rash is not the only sign.

Other symptoms are often non-specific. In the early stages it could be mistaken for other illnesses such as flu, although with meningitis the person tends to be sicker than with these other conditions. However, the disease can come on very quickly and it is important to seek urgent medical attention if you think meningitis is a possibility.

Cold and flu symptoms generally don’t need to be treated with antibiotics. Over the counter medicine can really help to relieve symptoms. If you are struggling with the winter bugs, feel free to pop in for advice, or give us a phone for advice 👏🏻

Remember we can also check there are no interactions between your own prescribed medication, and over the counter medication. It’s always important to check, and that’s exactly what we do! 👏🏻

The future of antibiotics depends on all of us using them properly.

Here’s how to play your part

• Most simple infections clear up on their own. You can visit your pharmacist for advice. Over-the-counter medicines may help you to manage your symptoms.
• If you do see your doctor, they’ll assess your symptoms and advise you on the correct treatment. Take your doctor’s advice and don’t demand antibiotics.
• If your doctor prescribes an antibiotic make sure you take it according to your doctor’s instructions.
• Complete the course and don’t just stop because you’re feeling a bit better.
• Never share antibiotics with anyone else.

Antibiotics don’t work against the flu or COVID 19, but getting your winter vaccinations if eligible can help. For further information on the winter vaccines see www.nidirect.gov.uk/wintervaccines
