Happy New Year!!!

Yup! You heard me!!

Okay okay hear me out. Don’t worry, I am aware that it’s August! This one is for all the parents out there.

School is starting soon. 🤯 It’s a new year. A fresh start. The teacher is new, the class is new, the extracurriculars all start up again and we get back into our routines.

And don’t get me wrong, this can be a chaotic, overwhelming, intimidating and anxiety provoking time. For parents and kids. But it’s also exciting. And an opportunity to reset. To recalibrate. And to ideally approach it all with intention.

So, if you’re wanting to be intentional about how you start this year, maybe pick a few of these and really consider what might make this year the best one yet?! And no pressure, we can always re-evaluate in December! 🎊Consider this getting a head start.

❓ Think back on last year - what went well? What didn’t?

❓ When did you notice stress or tension at home? What needs to shift to prevent that?

❓What needs to stay and what needs to go in terms of routines, schedules, goals?

❓ Are the expectations you have for your kids realistic?

❓Re: extracurriculars - were they bringing more stress than enjoyment? Check in and ask your kids periodically how they’re feeling about the weekly demands.

❓ Has something really been working for your kids/ the family dynamic this summer that could be continued during the school year?

❓ Have your kids been struggling to manage stress? Emotions? Change? What’s your plan to get ahead of any mental health challenges? Therapy? Involve their teacher? Explore school or community resources? Ensure they know you or other family/ friends are available to talk?

❓ If you find the grind of juggling school and life’s demands stressful, what’s your plan to take care of yourself so you can take care of your kids?

❓Bonus New Years Challenge *What is your plan to ensure you spend at least 15 minutes per day of *quality time* with your kids?

Always here if you need support along the way! 💛 www.hyggecounselling.com

Just gonna leave this here…

Make that change.
Have that conversation.
Start prioritizing yourself.
Take the walk.
Make the meal.
Run the errand.
Change the job.
Make a plan.
Book the appointment.
Commit to a new perspective.
Challenge that thought.
Try something new.
Apologize.
Take accountability.
Set the boundary.
Learn something new.

Doesn’t need to be big. Or it could be huge.
Either way, why are you putting it off? What is stopping you?

If you’re needing help getting started, these challenges came directly from conversations with clients this week. You’re not alone in needing to process these things out loud in order to actually do the thing.

Always here to help!

Although it is typically the individual with the eating disorder that is my client, their family members or support systems often inevitably become clients as well in some shape or form. At minimum, it is often to address this type of question.

This might be something you’re wondering about if someone close to you has a formally diagnosed eating disorder. But it can also come up if someone seems to be:
👉over or under eating
👉fixated on exercise, body size or food
👉struggling with mood, self-esteem or body image
👉 changes in body size and a decreased or increased interest in food
👉 history of having a difficult relationship with food or their body in some way

Anytime someone close to us is struggling, we want to know the best ways to support them. And if you’re worrying about someone else, I worry about the impact that worry is having on you.

So, not only can therapy be a helpful way to navigate how to best support someone, you can also receive support for yourself. It can be draining and overwhelming to be someone’s support network. It can feel scary or impossible to prioritize yourself when they’re struggling. Buts it’s crucial. For them and for you.

08/11/2023

While it can be a bit controversial, Health At Every Size (HAES) is an approach to public health aimed at reducing stigma towards overweight individuals. It aims to prioritize a healthy lifestyle over extreme weight loss recommendations.

In the treatment of eating disorders, this mentality and the research behind it can serve as an asset in challenging some of the societal expectations around ideal body shape and how it relates to health.

The “thin ideal” and how thinness is typically portrayed as “healthy” can contribute to extreme dieting practices and thought distortions about food, bodies and health.

Weight loss has proven to be difficult to maintain and studies show that the weight is often regained. The impact on a person’s mental health during these phases is concerning. As is the way some overweight individuals can be treated by the medical system.

For clients who equate thinness with health, considering this alternate approach and the research behind it can be helpful to reframe thoughts, beliefs and goals related to body weight and size.
