Instead of: “Here Lies”… Why not: “Here Flies”
Walter Morrison, the Inventor of the Frisbee

Before his death in February, 2010, Morrison asked that his cremated remains be mixed into a batch of plastic to produce a number of Frisbees that were to be given to family and friends.

Morrison is the inventor of the modern day Frisbee and this story begins in 1871. Frisbie Pie Company made pies which were placed in foil or tin containers. Local university students played with these, trying to see who could throw these objects the furthest.

Fast forward to the 1950’s Morrison and then-partner Warren Franscioni had invented a plastic disc in an attempt to improve the flight distance and accuracy of these tin objects calling it the “Flying Saucer.” Soon after, Franscioni and Morrison would part ways and then later in 1955, Morrison’s improved model would be sold to the toy company Wham-O as the “Pluto Platter.”

Wham-O released this new product in 1958, renaming the Frisbee (note the spelling change). The product would become a staple in outdoor play, selling in excess of 100 million units by the late 1970’s.

Frisbees have provided countless hours of fun for so many people. Learning to master the throw, trick shots and playing games like Frisbee Golf or Ultimate Frisbee are all activities that many have engaged in since its inception. The Frisbee was inducted into the Toy Hall of Fame in 1998.

Fly high Mr. Morrison!

The Rituals of Farewell (2023)
(Exploring Funeral Practices around the World)

Funeral rituals and practices are discussed by Wilfried Rousselot as he delves into this topic from varying perspectives and reference points. His dissertation takes the reader around the world to view rituals of saying goodbye as they have evolved over time and through different cultural and religious influences.

Rousselot uses three primary reference points in his depiction of funeral rituals. Anthropological, cultural and religious influences are explored to shed light on practices that have evolved through time. It needs mentioning that this is not an in-depth reporting on this topic, but rather an overview or summary of the customs and traditions that follow the death of a person.

One of the primary recurring themes in this book is the role of rituals of farewell in assisting in the transition of someone who died into an ‘afterlife.’ Often the objectives within these practices are to assist in purifying the soul and opening a door to rebirth or immortality.

If someone is curious about the standard practices performed by cultures or religions that they are unfamiliar with, this read is sure to provide some interesting insights.

Death of a Child

This television documentary interviews parents who have lost a child. What could be more painful than the death of a child? One thing. When you, their parent is responsible.

Through candid conversations, this exposé presents the thoughts and emotions of parents who have left their children in cars, who have subsequently died of heat stroke. Regrettably this happens all too often, on average the USA has 38 such deaths annually, children are left in car seats and parents forget about them, only to discover their dead bodies later that day.

For these parents the pain is unbearable. Providing the necessities of life is the phrase typically used to indicate the responsibility they have to their child. These parents experience shock, guilt, self-disgust and numbness. At a family level, they must reconcile with spouses, parents, in-laws and the siblings of their child. The initial inclination when a child dies, is to find blame.

At a societal level, the assumption is the parent has been neglectful. They have not lived up to their duties and responsibilities. Often parents are charged with negligent manslaughter or failing to provide the necessities of life. They are arrested and go to trial. In addition to the personal grief they and their family experience, the outside world judges and ostracizes them.

This tragedy has been studied by psychologists. Different parts of the brain function independently with respect to memory and remembering. One theory has individuals switching to auto-pilot mode at a critical point in time, with their brains not functioning properly to include possible risks to their child. They simply forget.

Do you answer the phone when your child is in the pool? It takes less than a minute to drown. Do you let your child ride their bike without you present? It is inevitable that from time to time, parents will make decisions that sometimes put their children at risk.

This documentary presents a sympathetic portrayal of this type of tragedy. It provides further insight concerning the death of children who are under the direct care of their parent. Given that our climate also includes extremely cold winters, it is also important to for caregivers to persevere in at this time of year. Let us be mindful of the consequences of what can happen if we forget. Never, ever leave an infant child or toddler unattended in a vehicle.

At a societal level, it’s important to remember that this type of tragedy can happen to each and every one of us. Let us not be too quick to judge.

Finding New Perspectives on Life

Is the glass half full or half empty? Each and every one of us will experience hardship and pain in our lives. Yes there are times when it seems a cloud is hanging over us. Sometimes this is because of events that are out of our control, sometimes it is about how we interpret what is happening in our life.

We do have a choice about how we will respond to the challenges that life presents us. This is can also be true for those who have experienced a recent loss. Time needs to be taken to mourn and grieve. In the long-term, grieving the loss of someone close is natural. If stuck in grief, however, shifting perspective may be a self-help tool that allows us to reorient our internal compass so that we are better able to understand and accept the impact of our loss.

Tips to Look at Our Lives in a Different Way

• Live in the present and know this may require change. Some of the old routines and ways of living life will need to be adapted.
• Foster an attitude of positivity. Don’t sweat the small stuff. Be grateful for the good that enters your life and surround yourself with positive minded people.
• Try new things. Don’t be afraid to fail.
• Be yourself: believe in yourself and what you find meaningful. Live with intention; trust that what you choose to do will be fulfilling.

Perspective and attitude go hand in hand. Sometimes life presents us challenges where we must adapt our way of living. Some things in life are not able to be changed. One thing we have control over though, is our perspective.
