Thank you for the poem, my dear husband, Paul
I know these words resonate with me and us all:❤

Finding a laptop at SEA-TAC seemed grim
But Paul and Joe arrived, all smiles and grins
Richard deftly captained the technical ship
While the other Paul managed to find Baguet Script

With Kate at the desk of her welcoming station
Megan arranged banners and a Towering creation
Excitement was building, but calm was the vibe
As geese filled the bay, Radka pulled me aside

“I’m so glad you’re with me! Now help me decide,
Should I wear jeans or my brown pants tonight?”
Decisions, decisions, the dominant theme
As Paul took the stage holding a green laser beam

Doctor Paul captivated – weaving poems with humour
Science and wit, fun props, questions in the mirror:
“How will I fuel me? Is it empty or valuable?”
Perplexing, but sexy are apples, and consumable

Reflection and tears, Dougie B in the house
Collective respect, all the courage he allowed
Challenged us all to be more well-round
To live on the edge, he’s now royally crowned

Colleen from Toronto was gracious, tenacious
Whip-smart and training, while making it painless
Three hours behind after her first floatplane flight
Vancouver to Nanaimo, she tucked in for the night

Megan, Gordana and Radka shared stories
Of passion, of heartache, of growing, and soaring
Eagles flew by, teaching young ones to fly
Reminiscent of Doug with the wisdom of knowing

Joe grew his message like kale and peppers
Creative, engaging, with jokes like a jester
Impressing us all with his gardening prowess
With limited water our food tastes much better

Rock wool and clips, little mesh pots and minerals
P.H. and lights, we are vegetable criminals
Sourcing it all ethically and sustainable
Forming a new team of like-minded individuals

My mom, a microbiologist, lovingly showed me the worlds of science and gardening. She was always an organic gardener, and I was her student, helper, and happy consumer.
I recall sitting atop our beautiful organic cherry tree, gorging on the ripe fruit and mischievously trying to spit pits on our neighbours. And here I am, preaching health and nutrition to anybody interested in listening.
I love gardening, but it can be very challenging in my environment, with rock, clay and evergreens surrounding me. I was a determined suburban gardener for years, driving around the peninsula and spending money on various manures, compost, topsoil, sand, and vermiculite, struggling to make my raised beds flourish.
I have always loved the raw materials of gardening, which my mother instilled in me. But last year, after four years of apparent failure, I finally experienced some success—and I didn’t use any dirt.
A friend had told me about an alternative – the Tower Garden – and I was initially skeptical. I was never really interested in hydroponics and had never heard of aeroponics. I genuinely love dirt – but when I visited my friends and saw their blooming Tower Garden, it prompted me to investigate vertical farming.
I immediately fell in love with the concept. Could I grow organic food with no fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides, use less than 2% water, and use non-GMO, organically grown local seeds or seedlings? Impossible, I thought. But here was proof right in front of me. I could completely control what I was growing and what I was putting in my body and my children’s bodies.
Further research revealed the creator of the Tower Garden, a man named Tim Blank. Tim had worked in the Living Garden at Epcot Center for years and was commissioned by NASA to help them grow produce aboard space shuttles for astronauts.
I satisfied my scientific and gardening mind on many levels – philosophically, practically and economically. I am now 100% behind the Tower Garden and enjoy helping people grow while using a fraction of the resources typically required!
