🏃‍♀️ 👟 Running shoes 🏃‍♀️ 👟

Seneca thinks it’s time for new running shoes!

Buying new running shoes can be daunting. There are so many designs, brands and colours.
There are also many different types of shoes to take into consideration. Barefoot running shoes vs supportive running shoes etc. These tips are some that I use when assessing supportive running shoes.

1) The shoe must be wide enough for your mid-foot to prevent compressing the toes.

2) Try the fold test (picture 2). Take the toe of the shoes and fold the shoe in half. Supportive shoes shouldn’t be able to fold in half.

3) Try the twist test ( picture 3). Twist the shoe to see how much give the shoe has. A little is fine but again, you shouldn’t be able to twist shoe on itself.

3) Heel pinch (picture 4). Take the heel and pinch it together. The heel should stay relatively stable.

Buying new shoes is a very individualized process. What works for someone may not work for someone else so these tips are some structural aspects of supportive running shoes that I look for. What are some aspects of shoes you look for?

📚 Back to school time!! 📚

September means back to school and back to wearing backpacks. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when choosing and wearing a backpack.

🎒 Choose a bag with thicker straps (bonus if it comes with chest and hip straps as well to distribute the loads of the bag).

🎒 Wear your bag higher up on your shoulders instead of lower down your back and utilize both straps if you can. If your bag only has one strap, try to switch shoulders as much as you can to prevent fatigue when carrying the bag.

🎒 Only pack what is needed for the day. Backpacks can get heavy quickly when filled with textbooks and binders. Only bring what you need for that day to keep the weight lower.

🎒 Pack your bag in a way that the heavier objects like textbooks or laptops, are packed so that they are closer to your back and the lighter items are further away.

Keep in mind to pack it light and wear it right!

How common is low back pain?

Whether you feel a twinge in your low back after lifting a heavy box or you experience having chronic back aches for years; low back pain is unfortunately very common in our society.

The lifetime prevalence of low back pain in adults can be variable but has been estimated to be as high as 84%*.

The reason for low back pain isn’t as simple as one might think. It can be due to a variety of factors such as: physical, social, lifestyle and psychological factors. For example: daily stressors in your life and how you are feeling mentally can contribute.

In a nutshell, low back pain is a condition that affects many people, overtime and for a variety of reasons. Chiropractors are trained to assess and diagnose back pain can help to treat it using methods like joint manipulations or soft tissue therapy. Rehabilitative exercises can also be used to help to strengthen muscles after an injury as well.

💥👂What is the popping noise heard during an adjustment ?!👂💥

I hear this question a lot! During a chiropractic adjustment you may hear a “popping” sound.
This sound is coming from gas escaping the joint spaces during an adjustment.

The joints in our spine have what’s called synovial fluid between them. During an adjustment, the joints in our spine will gap and gas in this fluid will get trapped. The popping noise results when this gas is released from the joint quickly causing an audible sound!

Chiropractors can perform adjustments on many joints in the body and not just the spine!
