Originally from Ottawa, Dr. Fan completed his Bachelor of Science in Life Sciences at Queen’s University, before earning his Doctor of Optometry degree from the University of Waterloo.

With clinical experience in Alberta and Newfoundland, Dr. Fan brings a strong background in ocular disease management, pediatric eye care, and contact lenses. After falling in love with the East Coast, he’s proud to now call Nova Scotia home, where he lives with his partner and their dog, Nellie.

Dr. Fan is passionate about delivering thorough, personalized eye care and building meaningful connections with his patients. When he’s not in the clinic, you’ll find him on the volleyball or pickleball court, travelling, or enjoying the great outdoors.

January is Glaucoma Awareness Month

Did you know? Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide.

What is glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that cause damage to the optic nerve over time. This is caused by increased pressure inside the eye due to a buildup of fluid.
Important to know:
✔️ Glaucoma can be diagnosed at any age — not just in older adults
✔️ Early detection is key, as vision loss cannot be reversed

Possible symptoms may include:
• Patchy blind spots
• Blurred vision
• Halos or coloured rings around lights
• Severe eye pain or headaches

Early stages of glaucoma, especially open-angle glaucoma, usually have no noticeable symptoms. Its nickname is “the silent thief of sight”.
