In the aftermath of the Battle of Waterloo (1815), the battlefield held something unexpected: thousands of intact young adult teeth. Traders quickly collected them, packed them in barrels, and shipped them across Europe.

Denturists of the era prized these teeth because they looked healthier and more lifelike than any alternative. Ivory dentures wore down fast, but real enamel didn’t — so “Waterloo Dentures” became the most sought-after prosthetics of the early 19th century.

These dentures weren’t primitive. Craftsmen mounted the harvested teeth onto carved ivory bases, shaped them into arches, and wired them with gold. For wealthy patients, this was the closest thing to a natural smile modern dentistry could offer.

It’s a strange chapter in dental history — a time when war casualties inadvertently supplied the raw materials for prosthetic dentistry. The practice faded only after the 1840s, when vulcanized rubber dentures and porcelain teeth finally took over.

Denturist Association of Canada national meetings were held in Banff, Alberta this year. It has been my privilage and honour to represent Nova Scotia Denturists. The team we have created for our society stands stong on a national level. I am very proud to be a part of this team. Was a great week of meetings and exploring. 🦷
