Drowning isn't always the dramatic gasping we imagine—sometimes it feels overwhelming, directionless, and clouded by uncertainty. It's crucial to pause, reconsider our perspectives, and seek support. Remember, you're not alone on this journey.

We've all made choices that seemed 'wrong' in the moment. But what if those very choices were life's way of showing us new vistas? A change in perspective can turn wrong seem so right.

I struggle with a Condition called Sessional Depressive Disorder (SAD). This is where the amount of sunlight can impact one’s mood negatively. The low amount of sun brought on my fall and winter causes an individual to feel low mood, fatigue, oversleep and overeat. Alternately when daylight increases in spring and summer one can have symptoms of insomnia, restlessness and a decrease in appetite. In my case, I am most impacted by the loss of light, and this brings on feelings of dread when the sunsets become earlier and earlier in the day.

As I notice this dread shows up! I use this dread as data and shift into preparation mode. First, I started to change my environment which offers comfort; bringing out the fuzzy blankets and add indoor ambiance with lights and candles. Additionally, I bring out the sun lamp to simulate sunlight exposure which help alleviate symptoms. I become more mindful about getting sunlight exposure incorporating a routine of walking outside on my lunch break at least three times a week.

How are you preparing to help manage the season of darkness?

It's remarkable how we often become our own harshest critics, berating ourselves for not meeting certain standards or expectations we set. The internal monologue of self-criticism can be loud and unrelenting, especially when we feel we've fallen short.

What if, instead of dwelling in discretion, we could intercept these harsh thoughts and transform them into self-appreciation?

Just this morning, I found myself spiralling into self-reproach for gaining a few extra pounds over the summer. Feelings of disgust and disappointment surged within me, and I began to criticize myself harshly.

However, I realized that this self-berating would not alter my reality; it would only deepen my sense of inadequacy.

So, I shifted my perspective. I reminded myself that I am a "work in progress." I embraced my love for food and the joy of sharing meals with loved ones as a beautiful part of who I am.

I then looked forward to initiating my fall routine and returning to the gym, seeing it as an opportunity for growth rather than punishment.

Now, it's your turn...let me know in the comments below something you appreciate about yourself!

Nothing is wrong with you!

You might feel out of place at a memorial service when your reaction to someone’s death isn’t sadness. Here are a few reasons why this might be the case:

If you weren’t close to the person who died, you might not feel the need to cry as others do.

If the death was sudden, you might be in shock and unable to process your emotions.

Some people internalize their emotions and grieve in their own way.

The relationship you had with the person who died may have been difficult and complex, bringing some relief followed by guilt for having this feeling.

If you can relate to any of these examples, know that you are not alone. As a counsellor, I often hear about these kinds of thoughts and feelings, and I can assure you that they are common. They don’t make you wrong or bad. Everyone grieves differently, and your unique response is valid.

Understanding the different types of grief can help individuals navigate their emotional experiences during times of loss. Here’s a deeper look into each type:

Anticipatory Grief: It can lead to complex feelings about the impending loss.

Acute Grief: This is the intense and immediate emotional response following a loss.

Absent Grief: Sometimes referred to as "invisible grief," this occurs when individuals do not outwardly express their grief, leading others to believe that they are coping well, even when they are struggling internally.

Secondary Grief: This type involves the additional losses that arise from the initial loss, such as loss of support systems or changes in lifestyle.

Cumulative Grief: This refers to the experience of multiple losses over time, where the cumulative effect can lead to overwhelming feelings and difficulties in processing each individual loss.

Ambiguous Grief: This is when people do not have resolution in their loss, never knowing what happened. This grief can cause a person to feel frozen int their grief unable to process.

Disenfranchised Grief: This occurs when an individual's grief is not acknowledged or supported by societal norms, such as the loss of a pet, a non-traditional relationship, or a stigmatized loss, leaving the individual feeling isolated.

By recognizing these different types of grief, we can foster empathy and understanding in ourselves and others, promoting healthier coping strategies and support systems.

Grief is a complex and universal experience that often gets associated exclusively with the loss of a loved one, but it can arise from a variety of other experiences as well. For instance, the end of a significant relationship, such as a divorce or a breakup, can evoke a profound sense of loss and mourning. Similarly, losing a job or facing a career setback can trigger grief as one copes with the loss of identity and stability. Major life transitions, like moving to a new city or retiring, can also bring about feelings of grief as individuals leave behind familiar environments and routines. Additionally, chronic illness or injury, whether affecting oneself or a close family member, can prompt a grief response due to the loss of health and the anticipated future. Even positive changes, like sending a child off to college or achieving a long-sought goal, can lead to a sense of grief over the end of a particular chapter in life. Recognizing these varied sources of grief helps to validate the emotions people experience and encourages a more compassionate and supportive response.
