Dear Alcohol,

White wine and whisky.

I don’t miss you anymore. Sometimes that still shocks me.

I used to need you every single weekend. I needed you for fun, for coping, for socializing. I first tasted you when I was 13 years old, and the fuzzy confidence and euphoria you brought me felt incredible.

You and I had a lot of fun together for many years. You made music feel deeper, laughter louder, and adventures more exciting. You were woven into celebrations, friendships, heartbreaks, and ordinary weekends.

But somewhere along the way, our relationship changed.

By my mid-twenties, you had a grip on me that I didn’t fully understand. You began to poison me. You stole my memories, leaving large gaps in nights I could no longer remember. You kept me trapped in old pain, replaying it over and over. You fueled depression and anxiety. You had me saying and doing things that never reflected who I truly was.

You even made me hate the sound of birds singing, boats going by and the sparkle of the sun because it was too loud and too bright for my dehydrated brain after another bender.

At the end, I made promises to myself every time. I would drink less. I would stay in control. I would protect my relationships. I would keep my dignity.

But you always took more than I intended to give.

You left me isolated, confused, trapped, ashamed, and exhausted.

On June 1, 2020, I woke up knowing something with absolute certainty: if I kept you in my life, you would eventually kill me.

I never believed I could leave you. I never believed I could build a life without you.

But here I am.

Six years later.

Healthier.
Clearer.
Stronger and more loving and connected

Every year I move farther and farther away from the person I was when I needed you to survive.

You are no longer my comfort, my confidence, my escape, or my friend.

I don’t need you anymore.

I never will again.

Goodbye forever, alcohol.

You did not win.

I did.

Six years sober.
June 1, 2026.

Nurses have never stopped amazing me, They are truly the biggest blessing in our health care system.

Working alongside nurses has been one of the greatest privileges of my life. I have watched them carry impossible workloads with skill, grit, compassion, and humour that somehow still survives in the middle of exhaustion.

Even now, years after the height of the pandemic, the strain on healthcare has not disappeared. Staffing shortages continue. The emotional and physical weight they carry is enormous.

They care for people on the worst days of their lives. They keep our loved ones alive. They hold hands through fear, pain, grief, and uncertainty. They advocate, comfort, stabilize, reassure, and somehow still find ways to laugh and make others feel human again.

I will never forget working with the nursing teams during one of the most overwhelming stretches I had ever witnessed. They blew my mind. They have such loyalty to their teams, their patients and their families. The knowledge they hold at the same time as managing crisis is nothing short of a miracle.

As I have worked through the years in different settings I have witnessed their bravery. I have had heartbreak that our healthcare system had become so stretched that basic human needs of nurses were being pushed aside (taking a p*e break, or getting vacation time to spend with their family)… and I have had absolute awe at the strength and dedication standing in front of me.

Nurses give more than people will ever fully see.

There will never be enough words to express the respect, gratitude, and admiration I have for the nurses in my life and in this world.

To every nurse carrying more than they should have to carry right now: thank you. What you do matters.

Happy Nurses Week, from the bottom of my heart. Meredith 💙
