Hacking your kid's packed lunch is a great way to try and keep them out of the dental chair.
The truth is many of the foods that make our lives easier (basically everything that's "shelf-stable") are very efficient at rotting our teeth 😬 Making good choices can feel overwhelming and we get that packing your little one's lunch is time consuming and stressful.
And this isn't about eliminating sugar entirely, limiting foods or sucking the joy out of your kid's mid-day brown bag or fancy Japanese style bento lunch box....
We're hear to make some recommendations and simple swaps that really add up in the long run!
Why it matters:
🦷 Tooth decay is the #1 most common chronic childhood disease—more common than asthma, cancer and diabetes combined and it's largely preventable.
🦷 Cavities cost Canadian families millions each year in dental bills, missed school, and missed workdays.
🦷 Cavities can cause pain, difficulty eating, and stress for both kids and parents.
We want children and adults in our community to have positive dental and oral health related experiences by helping them prevent cavities 🙌

Dry mouth, also known as xerostomia, can significantly increase your risk of cavities.
Here's the lowdown:
1. Increased demineralization: Saliva protects your teeth by neutralizing acids, cleansing the mouth, and remineralizing tooth enamel.
2. Acid Attacks: With reduced saliva, the pH balance in your mouth can shift towards acidity. This acidic environment becomes the perfect breeding ground for cavity causing bacteria.
3. Your mouth can no longer "self-cleans": When saliva flow is reduced, food particles and bacteria linger in the mouth for longer periods.
To mitigate the risk of cavities associated with dry mouth, stay hydrated, use a remineralizing toothpaste (containing fluoride or calcium hydroxyapatite) chew gum that contains xylitol and seek advice from dental and medical professionals.
Addressing the root cause of dry mouth (like mouth breathing) and maintaining good oral hygiene habits can help keep your smile healthy and cavity-free!
