"Self-care is giving the world the best of you, instead of what's left of you." - Katie Reed

Let's break the hectic cycle of our lives. Take some time for yourself with your physical and mental wellbeing in mind.. Go for a walk, do some gentle yoga in the morning, drink water instead of coffee, take some deep cleansing breaths and maybe treat yourself to a massage. You'll be amazed at the dividends a minor investment in yourself will pay.

I recently came across, and was heartened by, an article about Finland and the progressive changes they've legislated around parental leave. This is all on the heels of electing the youngest sitting head of state, Sanna Marin (34), which I find additionally encouraging.

In 2021, Finland will increase maternity leave from 4 months total to 7 months each for the Mother and Father, respectively. Approximately 3 of the 7 months can be transferred to the other parent and single parents are allotted 328 days.

I interpret this structure as encouraging and incentivizing men to take time at home with their children. It appears that if the Father doesn't take a leave, the family will miss out on 4 months of paid benefit.

I think this is important in myriad ways. As a Father that took 10-months off with my first son, I can speak to the bonding that occurred
and the personal growth that I benefited from. I read that a paternity leave spanning at least a month can lead to greater outcomes for children. We joke at my house that we're disrupting gender norms. My wife, being a doctor, is the primary breadwinner and always will be. Growing up surrounded by strong women, this doesn't bother me in the least. I know that my two boys will grow up with a greater sense of gender equality and that is very important to me. I want my sons to respect women as much as I do.

Additionally, subverting gender roles, even temporarily, can potentially curtail some of the misogyny that unfortunately still exists in the world. Solely care for an infant for a month and you will have a greater appreciation for the opposite s*x and the responsibility that often falls on their shoulders with little help.

Anyway, way to go Finland. Feeling a bit more optimistic after reading that.

What is Massage Therapy?

Massage therapy is the manipulation of soft tissues of the body including muscles, connective tissue, tendons, ligaments, and joints. Massage therapy is a clinically-oriented healthcare option that helps alleviate the discomfort associated with everyday occupational stresses, muscular over-use, and many chronic pain conditions.

Massage therapy should only be provided by a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT). An RMT is a primary healthcare provider in Ontario and anyone may visit an RMT of their choice.

Massage therapy can be used as a treatment for both acute and chronic conditions. RMTs work with a wide variety of patients in the treatment of illness, injury rehabilitation and disability.

The services of an RMT are not covered under the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP); however, many extended health benefit plans will cover all or part of the services provided by an RMT. A referral or prescription is not required to visit an RMT, although some insurance companies may require this. Massage therapy treatments may also be reimbursed by automobile insurance companies, if the client was in a motor vehicle accident, or in the case of workplace injuries, by the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB).

What to expect at your first appointment

On the first visit you will complete a confidential health history as part of your assessment. Your massage therapist will assess your individual needs as well as other factors that may be contributing to your injury or condition. The RMT will develop a treatment plan with you to ensure you receive appropriate treatment. The treatment plan can be changed at any time and will be reassessed at an appropriate time. You have no obligation to undergo any part of a treatment. Your treatment will begin once you have given your informed consent. This involves setting realistic goals for treatment, discussing possible responses to treatment, and being informed of alternative care options.

Michael De Ciantis, RMT

Michael’s journey to massage has been circuitous. He graduated from the Schulich School of Business at York University with an Honours degree in 2006 and went on to a successful 12-year career on Bay Street in Toronto in the Financial Services sector. After struggling with chronic pain and fatigue, Michael developed a passion for health and wellness. After improving his own quality of life through lifestyle change, Michael left his job in 2018 in the interest of helping others do the same. Michael took a 10-month parental leave to care for his first son, Jacob, before going back to school. He graduated at the top of his class en route to an Honours diploma in Massage Therapy from the Ontario College of Health & Technology in 2019. He is currently registered, in good standing, with the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario. Michael believes that massage can be an integral component of any rehabilitation plan as well as help minimize pain and increase body awareness for sustained well-being. His approach to treatment is multimodal and comprehensive, utilizing a combination of several therapeutic techniques and remedial exercises individually tailored for optimal patient outcomes. Michael’s versatile skill set allows him to effectively treat patients both clothed and with sheets. Myofascial Release, PNF Stretching, GTO release, Muscle Approximation, Positional Release, Trigger Point Therapy and Joint Mobilization are a few of the many techniques that he utilizes on a regular basis. As a life-long learner, continuing education is a crucial ongoing commitment for Michael in his desire to be of greatest service to the broadest spectrum of patients. To date, he has completed a workshop in Myofascial Cupping and Soft Tissue Release, with aspirations of further training in Medical Acupuncture, Fascial Stretch Therapy and Active Release Techniques, among other modalities.

Michael is a family man and currently resides in Burlington with his wife and two sons, Jacob (2) and Mason (6 months). He enjoys his daily meditation practice, yoga and hockey. He is a steadfast supporter of the the Maple Leafs, Raptors and Blue Jays and is always happy to talk sports. Michael is also an accomplished runner, having completed eight marathons. He is a voracious consumer of audio books and podcasts of varying topics revolving around health and wellness. Michael is also passionate about, and inspired by, volunteerism. He has engaged in wide-ranging efforts from Meals on Wheels and managing individual and corporate fundraising campaigns to helping out at the local shelter and regularly donating blood.
