Once absent from Atlantic Canada, heartworm is now appearing in the region in both dogs and wildlife such as coyotes and foxes. Heartworm is an internal parasite that is transmitted by infected mosquitoes. It can have very serious health consequences if left untreated in infected animals. Pet owners are encouraged to speak with their veterinarian about ways to help prevent heartworm infection in dogs and cats.

To tackle heartworm as an emerging health risk for dogs in Atlantic Canada, we have partnered with Atlantic Veterinary College - AVC at the University of Prince Edward Island and Mitacs to launch a Parasitology Residency Program.

Parasites like heartworm threaten animal health in Canada and the work done in this residency program will investigate its emergence in Atlantic Canada and help guide treatment and management practices in the region.

A unique, multi-buffer oral electrolyte solution can help support overall calf health.

Why is a multi-buffer system important in an oral electrolyte solution?

• It provides blood pH control.
• Bicarbonate gets straight to work because it doesn't need to be processed, while buffers, like propionate and citrate, need to be metabolized first but then provide a later effect on pH control.
• Bicarbonate should be at levels that do not interfere with milk digestion.
