I had the privilege of speaking at a Nar-Anon group in Oakville last night. I’ve been attending AA since I was 26 years old, but this was my first Nar-Anon meeting.
I just shared a little about my personal story, talked about the work I’ve done in the mental health and addiction field over the past 20 years, did a bit of Psycho-Ed and had some q&a. A lot of really great, deep comments and questions with not a whole lot of really great answers I feel.
I’ve always been moved by the strength and resiliency of people living with, and trying to overcome issues of mental health and addiction. This was different though. AA/ NA is people struggling with frustration, disappointment, grief and guilt associated with their drinking and drug use. There it was people struggling with frustration, disappointment, grief and guilt associated with someone else’s drinking and drug use. Plus their own guilt (shame?) of setting boundaries, even when it’s done with love.
Strength and resiliency? In spades.
Sending love, strength & hope to all those dealing with their own issues, and/or worrying about a friend or loved one.
