Motivational interviewing techniques should be added to your treatment delivery, especially if your patient is having a hard time adhering to the recommendations. Longer visits allow you to dig into their values, their barriers and help them come up with a solution to overcome their challenges.

Patients often want to cancel if they "haven't done what you said." It's important you convey to them the importance of doubling down on the visits when they are having a hard time executing.

It's the very thing that will help them stick to their goals.

What's an evidence-based ND to do when the Cochrane review is so negative?

We faced this this past month at our longevity GR. The research on fish oil for depression is pretty decent, except the Cochrane review gives it a thumbs down.

We want you to be equipped with the confidence for when to prescribe anyway, and how to talk to your patients about inconsistencies in the research.

We talked at length about what dose, ratio and "who" fish oil works in for depression, so our clinicians could be supportive without worrying about what the guidelines say.

Do you have a Cochrane review you're frustrated with? I remember showing the review on probiotics and IBD to GI residents at McMaster Med school one time (in one of my previous lives) and even THEY thought it was ridiculous.

This week’s episode of The ND Gap explores one of the hardest parts of practice: learning how to sit comfortably in the gray. Dr. Anne Hussain and I talk about what patients actually want from us, why certainty is often overrated, and how clinicians can build more thoughtful, patient-centred decision-making into everyday care.

If you missed the episode, these key takeaways offer a look at what makes this conversation so important for our profession.

Work fam ❤️.

The women who work with me have taught me so much about leadership and have healed that sister wound that so many of us carry around into adulthood. These women have always had my back (even in the years I didn’t deserve it).

and I have known each other for over 20 years (she was my volunteer at the pool for the city of Burlington). She also worked for me as a receptionist when she was a student 🥹 and eventually joined the clinic as an ND a looong time ago (like Pearl street days). I don’t remember what year she joined me to be honest! Let’s call it 2017? (Help me out Er!)

impressed me the moment I met her (when she trained ME on IVs) and I was lucky enough to hire her 5 years later. She’s one of the most caring practitioners and team members, and is our official snake handler for any office snakes (we’ve had 2 🐍). She joined in 2021.
dominiquevaniernd joined Clarity before growing her family (and now has 2 babies!). She handles her packed schedule like a pro, and has already started seeing a few patients here and there after baby number 2. She joined in 2022.
gri.nd and joined at the same time in 2023. They brought menopause care and weight management support to support our busy practice. Andrea had been working in an MD primary care office for years and has probably clocked more Pap tests than all other NDs combined. She’s an incredible support and coach for her patients. Laurie was looking for something to give her work purpose and clarity (ha!) and is willing to drive from Toronto to be with us. The sometimes tricky conversations about HRT is Laurie’s zone of genius)

Our staff team of Erin (2018), Carissa (2019) and Christine (2021) have stuck with me through a lot of phases and changes. I’m so grateful for their steadiness while I sometimes “have ideas”.

And our newest member, who will be ready for patients this spring is an exciting addition of the next generation of evidence based NDs (and we’re secretly hoping she dresses us from now on).

I hope you’re as lucky as I am in your work life ❤️.
