Today is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. As therapists who work more often than not with trauma, we are aware of the deep and the lasting pain many Indigenous folks experience every day, pain that has been passed down through generations. This day is one to put the spotlight on their stories, which for so many years were spoken in whispers, or silenced altogether. We’ve seen the transformative power of speaking the truth out loud, and the comfort that comes from being truly heard and believed. There’s so much more that needs to be done on this path, but the conversation has started, and that means the journey to healing has also begun.

Taking steps to prevent burnout is absolutely worth it, and it can help even when you are already starting to feel burned out. When you give yourself time to rest and recharge, you're boosting your resilience. Simple things like setting boundaries, prioritizing self-care, and asking for help can make a huge difference. Recognizing when you're pushing too hard and adjusting your pace helps you stay on a healthier track. Remember, preventing burnout isn't just about avoiding the bad stuff – it's about investing in your well-being so you can tackle challenges and enjoy your life.

Taking care of someone who relies on you is important work, but it can be really draining too (even when it's someone you love). If you're feeling worn out, irritable, or like you've hit a wall, that's not unusual – it's called caregiver burnout. You deserve support just as much as the person you're caring for.
Remember, it's okay to ask for help. Reach out to friends, family, or professionals. Therapy can provide a space where you can unload your feelings and learn new ways to handle the stress. Taking care of yourself isn't selfish; it's necessary for both you and your loved one.
And if you're worried about a caregiver friend, talk to them. Sometimes they might not even realize how much they need help. Just being there and offering to listen can make a huge difference. Your support matters, and there are resources to help both caregivers and their friends navigate through this challenging time.

Meet Natalie St-Denis, an experienced therapist who has recently joined us over at Christina Janiga Psychotherapy. With over 20 years of expertise in supporting individuals with chronic pain, Natalie takes a holistic approach that considers both physical and emotional aspects. Using a variety of mental health methods like CBT, ACT, and EFT, she helps clients dealing with chronic pain, post-partum trauma, grief, anxiety, and more.

Natalie's focus is on creating a safe space where each person's story matters. She tailors her approach to address the connections between physical pain, thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. She's also sensitive to cultural diversity, drawing from her experience with Indigenous Family Health Teams to provide culturally informed counselling. Natalie's goal is to guide clients toward holistic healing, embracing mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being.

It's crucial to be aware of the warning signs of burnout, especially in professions where it's prevalent like healthcare, first responders, and teaching. Feeling consistently exhausted, irritable, and having trouble concentrating are key signals. If you're finding it hard to detach from work, neglecting your own needs, or your performance is slipping, these are signs too.
In professions that demand a lot, burnout can creep up gradually. Being mindful of your mental and physical well-being can help catch it early. If you notice these signs, don't hesitate to reach out for support. Talk to colleagues, supervisors, or consider seeking professional help like therapy. Remember, recognizing burnout is a proactive step towards maintaining your own health and ensuring you're able to provide the best care to others.

Resentment can be a flashing warning sign of burnout. When you start feeling consistently bitter or frustrated, it often means you've been pushing yourself too hard for too long. It's like your mind's way of telling you that something's off balance. Paying attention to this feeling can help you identify burnout early and take steps to recharge and find your equilibrium again.

If burnout's got you down, know that relief is possible. Start by taking small steps to unplug and recharge. Maybe try a short walk in nature, open a magazine or listen to a podcast, or consider trying a 5-minute meditation. Prioritize sleep, eat well, and move your body a bit every day. Remember, you're human, not a machine – taking breaks is essential. And try to acknowledge the things you accomplish. Slowly but surely, you can beat burnout and get back to feeling more like yourself.

When burnout's knocking at your door, self-care is a great tool to help rebuild yourself. You don't need to leap tall buildings in a single bound. Small steps often work wonders. Think of it as taking baby steps back to feeling good. Tiny acts of self-care can add up, helping you recharge slowly but surely. So, don't feel like you need to tackle everything at once – go easy on yourself, and remember that you are worthy of care.

The term "burnout" is one that you may have heard before, but what is it, really? Burnout is a feeling of deep exhaustion, both mental and physical, because of too much stress, constantly unfinished tasks, or pressure. It's like you are always running on empty with no time to fill your tank. Your health can be impacted, and you may find you have a very low emotional tolerance for things that never used to bother you. The good news is that recovery from burnout is possible, and counselling can be a big help! At Christina Janiga Psychotherapy, we have two therapists who are able to help with burnout, Natalie St-Denis and Christine LeLacheur. Talking it out in counselling can help you understand what's causing the burnout and learn how to manage it, so you can get back to feeling more like yourself.
