🎗️ More than a Milestone: It’s World Cancer Day 🎗️

Winston is a true . He has finished not his first, nor second, but his THIRD chemotherapy protocol! He has done remarkably well and his Oncology team over at VCA Canada Mississauga Oakville Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Hospital is especially proud of him.

February is , and the best weapon we have is early detection. In honor of Winston and every pet fighting the "Big C," here are three things you can do at home today:

✅ The "Monthly Massage": Run your hands over your dog’s entire body. Look for new lumps, bumps, or changes in skin texture. Any new lump that persists, grows, or worries you, get it checked.

✅ Watch the Energy: Is your dog suddenly slowing down or losing interest in food? Subtle changes in behavior are often the first "whispers" of a health issue.

✅ Fresh Breath Check: Persistent bad breath or bleeding gums can sometimes be an early sign of oral tumors.

Many cancers have more options and better outcomes when caught early. Winston is a fighter, but we want to help you spot the signs before the fight even begins.

We send our best wishes to Winston for continued health and lots and lots of cookies for he's a 10/10 good boy. 🍪🐾

🐾 | Loch’s journey to a pain-free life 🐾

At just under three months old, Loch came into a local British Columbia SPCA surrendered alongside his siblings. At four months, he was adopted into a loving home and began what everyone hoped would be his forever story.

Sadly though, at just one year old, Loch found himself back at the BC SPCA. Returned for what was deemed to be behavioral concerns. However, our team over at VCA Canada Island Animal Hospital quickly noticed something more going on. He was showing signs of pain and limping in his back end. The diagnosis? He needed surgery on both back knees. 🦴

The Central Island team then referred Loch to our surgery team over at VCA Canada Central Victoria Veterinary Hospital, and with help from our program, were able to provide Loch with the specialized orthopedic care he desperately needed.

Loch has been living with a foster while he recovers and heals from both surgeries, and he has reportedly taken it all in stride. He now comes to work at the SPCA every day, where he proudly greets customers, helps out at the reception desk, and wins hearts wherever he goes.

Loch is a true ambassador for his breed. He loves every dog and every person he meets, and his gentle, social nature shines through in everything he does. The program didn’t just support Loch’s medical journey, it helped give him a second chance at the happy, pain-free life he deserves. 💙

🐾 | Antonia and the Mission for Hands-Free Radiology 🐾

At VCA Canada, our care is driven by people like Antonia, whose connection to animals started long before her career began. Even before she was born, a psychic told her mother she "would be able to communicate with dogs". While Antonia says to take those things "with a grain of salt," it ended up being true: "I always knew I would work with them".

Today, Antonia is channeling that lifelong passion into a mission that protects both our patients and our teams: Hands-Free Radiology.

What exactly is Hands-Free Radiology? It means our medical teams are not physically holding a pet in place during an X-ray or CT scan. To achieve this while getting the best image possible, we use a combination of straps, wedges and sandbags to position your pet perfectly. In some cases, medications, anesthesia or sedation may be used to reduce your pet’s stress, relieve pain, and maintain position.

Why Antonia is pushing for change:

🐾 For the Pets 🐾 Antonia believes the old way is "archaic" because "it can be a very scary and painful experience for animals".

🥼 For the Teams 🥼She believes "there shouldn't be a dollar value that is more important than the patient’s experience or the health of Associates".

Moving away from outdated practices is "saving a boatload of radiation exposure" that can lead to "cancer, thyroid issues and irreversible DNA damage".

Thanks to the advocacy of team members like Antonia, 85% of X-rays taken at VCA Canada hospitals were hands-free! That represents 20,923 X-rays where pets were kept comfortable and Associates were kept safe.

Antonia’s next goal? To "take this to the federal government and lobby for change so that all vet techs in Canada and all the pets we treat are looked after and protected in the best way possible". As she puts it, "I really believe we can do this, but hey, I’m no psychic". 😉

We are so proud of Antonia for leading the way toward 100% hands-free X-rays at ! 💙

🐾 Happy 🐾

Wrapping up the student spotlights of last summer, is Jess! Jess is a WCVM student ambassador (Western College of Veterinary Medicine Class of 2027), but was also a summer DVM student at VCA Canada Central Victoria Veterinary Hospital.

Here's what she had to say on her time over at CVIC:

"I feel so grateful to have gotten the opportunity to work and learn at Central Victoria Veterinary Hospital this summer. When looking for a summer job I was super keen on joining a team of highly trained and hardworking individuals like those at CVIC, and I was certainly not disappointed! It was such a treat to get the valuable hands-on experience in high-pressure emergency situations. Because of the mentorship from CVIC's TAs, technicians, receptionists, and veterinarians, I have gained indispensable confidence in my place in veterinary medicine and the direction I want to take from here. I am beyond thankful for everyone who took the time to teach me, patiently answer my endless questions, and include me in all of the interesting cases and procedures I got to enjoy this summer.

This position really showed me that while veterinary medicine can be extremely challenging, it can also be incredibly fruitful and rewarding; for example, I got to be involved in the care for Oebe, a miracle pup who spent three weeks in the ICU after nearly losing her life. Watching her finally walk out of the hospital was unforgettable. Her story is just one of the many examples I witnessed this summer of the magic that can happen when people can work harmoniously as a team and reminded me why I chose this profession. Thanks to everyone at CVIC, I had a great summer!"

This is what is all about! We’re so glad to hear the team at VCA Canada Central Victoria Veterinary Hospital took such great care of you. Each of our locations prides itself on mentorship, and it sounds like you made the most of every second. We can’t wait to see where your career takes you next!

🦷 Keeping Your Pet’s Smile Bright 🦷

Dental care is an essential part of keeping your pet healthy and pain free and daily brushing is the best way to maintain good dental health.

Tooth brushing requires training, and our team is happy to show you how. When brushing is not possible, dental diets, water additives, and dental chews can help, especially those with the VOHC (Veterinary Oral Health Council) seal of approval.

Signs of dental disease include bad breath, red, swollen or bleeding gums, discoloured teeth, loose or missing teeth, facial swelling, excessive drooling, dropping food, or eating on only one side of the mouth.

If significant dental disease is already present, brushing may be painful and not appropriate until professional treatment is provided.

📞 Give us a call or come in to learn about our wellness plans, with the option to add on a dental cleaning.

We are here to support your pet’s comfort and long term health.

🐾 | T'challa 🐾

They say it takes a village, and T’challa’s village showed up when he needed them most.

A quiet evening walk is usually the best part of the day, a time to decompress and bond. But for T’challa and his owner, a routine stroll was shattered in an instant when they were struck by a vehicle. While we are so grateful his owner escaped with only minor injuries, T’challa’s path to recovery was going to be much steeper.

Left with a fractured pelvis and a very worried owner, our community give-back program swung into action.

He came into his regular vet clinic, VCA Canada Central Saanich Animal Hospital for an exam and radiographs, and was diagnosed with a fractured pelvis and significant road rash. Due to the severity of his pelvic fracture, surgery was required to fix it. T'challa was referred to VCA Canada Central Victoria Veterinary Hospital to meet with the surgery team there.

T'challa spent a few days with the team at Central Victoria, and had a long surgery to repair all the injuries to his pelvis and hind limbs.

From the first X-ray at Central Saanich to the life-changing surgery at Central Victoria, T’challa’s journey is a testament to what happens when we put community first.

Seeing him run again is the greatest gift we could ask for. 💙

It’s -20°C outside, the sun sets at 4:30 PM, and your dog is currently doing high-speed laps around the coffee table. We’ve all been there. ❄️🏠

The "indoor blues" are real for , but here’s a secret from the team: your dog doesn’t always need a 5km hike to tire out. They need to use their brain. 🧠

In fact, 15 minutes of "mental work" can be just as exhausting for them as a long walk in the park.

If you're stuck inside and the cabin fever is setting in, try these vet-approved ways to burn that energy!

Have you ever wondered what it actually takes to don the white coat, or where the next generation of experts gets their first "real-world" practice? It’s a journey that starts long before the title. One paved with years of grit, late-night study sessions, and intensive clinical rotations where students transition from textbooks to hands-on care for pets like yours.

By providing a supportive environment where future vets can bridge the gap between textbooks and the exam room, we’re helping shape the high-standard care of tomorrow. This week's spotlight is on Erica who shares about her time at VCA Canada Uniacke Lakes Animal Hospital.

"I had a great time as a DVM student at Uniacke Lakes Animal Hospital this summer. I gained hands on experience in a variety of positions in the clinic, with the technicians, assistants, and doctors. They provided opportunities to ask questions, learn, and grow with a dedicated and caring team. I got to watch procedures, help with client care, and assist in different diagnostics. I want to work in small animal general practice, and Dr Pollard is an amazing mentor who taught me so much about compassionate care. I am very grateful for my experience this summer"

Thank you Erica for giving us a glimpse into your journey. Mentoring students like you is one of our favourite ways to give back to the profession we love. We are so excited to watch you succeed and can’t wait to see the positive impact you’ll make in the industry. 💙

There is something so special about hitting the open road with your favorite co-pilot. The extra snacks, the shared scenery, and that sleepy head resting on the center console.

But as veterinarians, we also know that the "getting there" part is where things can get a little unpredictable. Our pets don't always understand the change in routine, and as we look ahead to 2026 travels, we want to make sure your adventures are as safe as they are fun.

Here are a few reminders from our team on how to protect your greatest companions on the road.

Where is the furthest you’ve ever traveled with your pet? We’d love to hear your favourite road trip memories (or your best travel tips) in the comments! 👇
