This past week, I had the privilege of participating in a medical mission in the Dominican Republic, providing audiological services to kids and adults with ear and hearing problems. We traveled to Yamasa, a small inland town with limited access to these vital services. The locals welcomed us with open arms, showcasing their kindness, generosity, and warmth. As a native Spanish speaker, I was able to overcome the language barrier, facilitating meaningful connections with the community. We were graciously hosted by local families who shared their homes, meals, and hospitality with us. This experience has left an indelible mark on my life and heart, and I hope to have the opportunity to continue making a positive impact there again in the future.
I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the Perry Medico Foundation for allowing me to join their team of volunteers and to Sense of Hearing for sponsoring this life-changing trip.
My week was a whirlwind of incredible experiences and lifelong memories. The locals welcomed me with open arms, treating me like family and sharing unforgettable moments with me in and out of the clinic. Everyone's infectious smiles and positivity uplifted me, and I was humbled by their gratitude and cooperation. I connected with them on a deep level, sharing laughter, stories, meals, adventures and pictures, and we even sang, danced, and explored together. I was inspired by their resilience and generosity, and I felt grateful for the opportunity to learn from them, support them, and celebrate their strengths. I will always treasure the memories and lessons I gained from this experience.
