The Proactive Athlete is where athletes work with multidisciplinary healthcare teams to restore health and maximize sport performance. These sport specialist professionals focus on the needs of the athlete that relate to healing, optimal health and injury prevention. The Proactive Athlete clinics are located within Sports Specific Training (SST) facilities which specialize in elite strength training and conditioning. The Proactive Athlete and SST are affiliated to supported athletes in achieving their goals. The Proactive Athlete's vision is to alter the health paradigm from reactive to proactive. Pickleball is back!

After a successful inaugural event last year, we are gearing up for the 2nd annual TPA Pickleball Championships in support of

Friday September 12th, 3pm-6pm at Cedar Springs. Food and drinks will be provided. Cash donations accepted at the event!

Just like last year we will have 2 streams.
Competitive and recreational.

🌟Shoutout to rockstar TPA patient, Star!🌟

This May, she crushed the Sulphur Springs Trail Race 100K — and what a story it was!

Last year, she tackled this race feeling dialed in and fully prepped.

This year? A few injuries along the way meant fewer miles and some uncertainty going in. But true to her name, Star lined up at that start in solid form — focused, ready, determined.

She had three big goals:

✔️ Break 12 hours
✔️ Beat the Olympian
✔️ Qualify for Western States

And let me tell you — the day was HERS from the start. Her running buddy gave her the green light to charge ahead on the first lap, and what a great call. Every lap rolled in ahead of target time, her crew kept her fueled (perogies and ginger ale — a woman after my own heart 💛), and when the 5th and final lap rolled around, it wasn’t just another loop — it was a victory lap.

All goals met. Hard-earned. Well-deserved. What. An. Achievement. 💫

Massive congrats, Star — your grit, patience, and pure determination are inspiring! 🙌

👟 Shoe shopping for kids is hard…if you care about not putting their feet in a foot coffin.

What’s a foot coffin? A place their feet go to die.

Hard soles, thick cushioning, rigid “support” in the arches and narrow toe boxes make for a perfect foot coffin.

This is my 9 year old, learning what characteristics in a shoe are bad for your foot.

Do they like shoe shopping with dad? Absolutely not. Just like they don’t like eating vegetables. But they understand why it’s good for them.

What to look for in a kids all purpose shoe ⬇️
✅ wide toe box (non negotiable)
✅ thin/flexible sole
✅ no arch support
✅ no added foam for “comfort” (zero stack height and zero heel toe drop)

Where do you even find such a shoe?

Minimalist shoe retailers who care about foot function. A couple we have had some success with:

When possible, wear no shoes at all. Let their feet feel the grass, sand and dirt. Barefoot is best for arch development, balance and athletic function.

Needless to say all we found in the mall were perfect foot coffin’s.

Alex sharing some Osteopathic techniques with us during our staff meeting this week.

When Pete and I started The Proactive Athlete 15 years ago, our vision was to build a team that was driven to put patient care and clinical results at the forefront, regardless of the certifications and professional designations of the practitioners.

Whether you are a Chiropractor, Physiotherapist, Osteopath, Athletic Therapist or Massage Therapist matters much less than how you consistently help patients to achieve their goals.

It is sessions like this that help us learn from one another to expand and hone our skillset that drives progress on this mission.

Here’s what you should really expect ⬇️

📊 A recent systematic review and meta-analysis of over 740,000 patients who underwent either a total knee replacement (TKR) or total hip replacement (THR) found that as many as 1 in 7 may continue to have some level of persistent pain.

PMID 40398950

These surgeries are among the most successful in medicine when it comes to reducing disability from osteoarthritis and getting people back to the things they love, however pain free recovery is not guaranteed.

Realistic expectations 🟰better recovery

This is completely normal. And in fact if you don’t have any challenging days it probably means you aren’t optimizing your recovery.

🙏 Thanks to everyone who came out last night to hear Joe Baker talk athlete development.

One surprising insight from last nights talk:

➡️ overall we are quite poor at predicting athlete success, but one of the best predictors of an athletes ability to be successful has nothing to do with the physical qualities of the sport and more to do with cognitive, psychological and emotional factors of self regulation.

✅ are they able to set an appropriate goal and diligently work towards that goal
✅ can they plan ahead what needs to be done to get better
✅ are they conscientious in their approach

This is an area of youth athletic development that gets very little attention and can have a huge impact.
