The beginning of a new year often leaves us feeling run down, exhausted, and lacking motivation.

When we feel run down, we tend to isolate from the people who bring us pleasure and withdraw from the activities we like to do.

The more we isolate and withdraw, the worse we feel. The worse we feel, the less motivated we are to make any change.

If this sounds like you, give yourself permission to schedule time for the things you enjoy doing, and even better, schedule it with the people who you enjoy. Whatever it is, prioritize you.

Because if you don’t, who will? 🤍

Taking the time for rest is essential for our mental health and well-being.

So why is it so hard to give back to ourselves?

In a fast paced world, there is so much pressure to do more, be more and give more. Days overflow with meetings, chores, childcare responsibilities, and notifications from our phones pulling our attention in every direction. This cycle of responsibilities and distractions isn’t just exhausting and overwhelming, but it can have harmful effects on our mental health.

What happens when we fill from an empty cup? Our body will take a break at a time that is much less convenient for us.

Prioritize rest. Your body will thank you later.

It’s natural to feel the urge to avoid or push away from unwanted, difficult and painful emotions.

In the short term, this can be helpful and provide temporary relief.

However, in the long term, if avoidance becomes the norm, these difficult emotions can actually become more intense and last longer. In addition, the anticipation can be very difficult to manage.

Embracing difficult emotions can reinforce our natural resilience and the ability to do hard things. You got this.

In fact. The research suggests that we need to be in tune and in sync 30-50% of the time.

Which means that 50-70% we are allowed to be human.

And make mistakes.

And lose our cool.

And grumble our breath.

And not be ‘award winning’ parents.

And be real.

This realness teaches our kids that it’s ok to not do it right the first time or have it all together all of the time.

Besides. It’s not about how you respond in the moment, but about how you repair those moments that didn’t go perfectly.

It takes a tremendous amount of courage and strength to ask for help for yourself and your family.

The summer months are a great time to start, or continue, therapy. With a change in most people’s routines, the summer presents a unique opportunity to shift the focus from schedules and structure to self-care and individual wellness. In addition, the long summer days can have a positive impact on mood, energy, and stress levels making this the optimal time to focus on yourself.

Why should you have to wait to be the best version of yourself?
